Below is the version history of the operating system iOS (formerly iPhone OS ) from Apple described in detail.
Version 1.0 of the operating system was presented on January 9, 2007 together with the first iPhone at the MacWorld Conference and Expo . At that time, Steve Jobs referred to "iOS" as " OS X that runs on the iPhone". Currently, iOS is the operating system for iPhone and iPod touch . There are derivatives for the Apple TV ( tvOS ), the Apple Watch ( watchOS ), the HomePod ( audioOS ) and the iPad ( iPadOS ).

General
Installable with iTunes iOS updates are always as IPSW (file iP hone S often w are) ago. An IPSW file is a regular ZIP archive. This includes images of the root and user partition of iOS , as well as other data relevant to the basic system.
Up to version 4.0 iOS had no official name, it was only known as "iPhoneOS" or "iPhone Software", since the renaming to iOS in June 2010 Apple also officially calls the older versions not previously called "iOS" "iOS" ( e.g. iOS 3.0).
Up to version 4.0, a major update of iOS was not free for all iPod touch users, but had to be purchased for $ 10 (€ 8.99).
Not all iOS updates are available for all devices - for example, the iPad up to version 4.2 received its own updates that were not compatible with the iPhone or iPod touch, and only the iPhone 5 and iPad mini received the iOS 6.0.2 update in December 2012 due to of incorrectly functioning WLAN connections. For older devices e.g. the iPhone 3G, iOS 4.2.1 was the last update, newer versions, e.g. B. iOS 5 can no longer be installed here.
After the release of the current major version, Apple only released an update for an already obsolete major version in five cases:
iOS 1.1.5 for iPod touch 1G three days after iOS 2.0 was released
iOS 3.2.1 for the iPad in July 2010 on the same day as iOS 4.0.1
iOS 3.2.2 for the iPad in August 2010 one day before the release of iOS 4.0.2
iOS 6.1.5 for iPod touch 4G in November 2013, two months after iOS 7.0 was released
iOS 6.1.6 for iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4G on February 21, 2014, the same day as iOS 7.0.6
In the case of iOS 12, however, even after iOS 13 has been released, Apple regularly releases security updates for devices that are not compatible with iOS 13. Special features of the affected devices are, on the one hand, that with this version for the first time two generations of iPhones ( iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 (Plus)) do not get the next version, and the iPhone 6 (Plus) is still the best-selling iPhone to this day. In the case of macOS , older versions have been handled this way for a long time. There, security updates will be made available for a major version 2 years after the successor has been released.
Some versions were never published or withdrawn due to serious deficiencies, so Apple released update 8.0.1 on September 24, 2014, which severely impaired the modem functionality of the iPhone - Apple then withdrew the update.
Not all the same iOS version numbers have the same build number, so iOS 5.1.1 is available for download as build 9B206 and 9B208. Not every build is compatible with every device.
In theory, every modem firmware (baseband) is compatible with every iOS version. In practice, however, Apple publishes modem firmware and the actual iOS operating system in the same IPSW installation file, which makes it impossible to separate the modem firmware and iOS. If it were possible to downgrade iOS , the modem firmware would not be overwritten and would not be downgraded to an older version. There are a few exceptions, for example the iOS 4.0 modem firmware can always be installed on the iPhone 3G with a special jailbreak .
Naming The original software of the first iPhone from June 2007 did not have a name of its own. Instead, it was stated that a modification of Apple's desktop operating system Mac OS X runs on the iPhone . In addition to the iPhones, this software with fewer functions has also been used on the iPod touch since September 2007.
With the release of the iPhone SDK (= software development kit), the software was named "iPhone OS".
The first iPad, like the iPod touch, used a modified version of the software. For example, it did not contain a phone app, but it did contain special gestures for controlling the iPad. Because of this, the fourth version was now called “iOS”.
With the thirteenth version, the iPad software was renamed “iPadOS” in order to express the increasing distance from the iPhone and iPod touch variants in recent years. iPhone and iPod touch continue to use iOS.
Categories of updates iOS updates can be divided into three "categories":
Update of the major version A fundamental update, for example from iOS 10 to iOS 11, which appears once a year. Here the entire system can be converted and profound changes, such as the introduction of a new processor architecture, can be made. A major update, for example from iOS 11.0 to iOS 11.1, which appears up to four times a year. Such an update contains new functions on a larger scale. A small update, for example from iOS 11.1.1 to iOS 11.1.2, which appears at irregular intervals. It usually only contains small things such as security holes or bug fixes, but mostly no new functions. Installation of an update

There are several options for updating iOS:
An update via the Apple OTA service since iOS 5 iOS downloads a system update in the background and, after the successful download, offers the user the option of installing it in the settings app directly on the device. The update will be installed after confirmation by the user when restarting. Classic installation via iTunes Update using the "Update" button; iTunes loads the system update, puts the iPhone into recovery mode and installs the update without removing the system settings or the media or Restore from DFU mode or restore mode , in which iTunes loads the iOS update like a conventional update, but deletes all content on the target device and no update of iOS in the narrower sense is carried out, but a reinstallation of the current iOS version. This process prevents the occurrence of problems that may arise from an update, such as deteriorated battery life. With Apple development tools The installation of iOS with development tools is only intended for Apple employees and is therefore hardly known to a normal user. It differs from all other options in that it is not subject to any restrictions - iTunes can only ever install the current iOS version - development tools, however, any iOS version or only parts of it, since no firmware files are installed, but so-called bundles . However, the primary purpose of these development tools is to set up iPhone prototypes and install test environments. OTA update IOS over-the-air updates are different from a traditional IPSW update . With an OTA update, only the most important system components are updated; the basic system is retained. For this reason there is a separate OTA update for each iOS version; If you update to iOS 7.0.4, an iPhone with iOS 6.0 receives a different OTA update than an iPhone with iOS 7.0.1, as there are different basic systems (iOS 6.0 and 7.0.1) and different components have to be updated. This remains hidden from the user. An OTA update is released as an unencrypted ZIP archive from the Apple servers. The Internet address that an iOS device calls to check for new updates is mesu.apple.com.
Remove an update
iPhone 4 that has been downgraded from iOS 7 to iOS 4.1. The baseband (modem firmware) of iOS 7 (version 04.12.09) is still installed.
It is not intended to remove iOS updates again and to carry out a so-called downgrade in order to install an older iOS version. Therefore, only the very old iOS 1.x and iOS 2.x updates can be reinstalled after an update to a newer version. In this case, however, there may be a conflict with the modem firmware, so that the iPhone can be downgraded, but not activated and thus not used. In order to downgrade to iOS versions newer than 2.2.1 , SHSH blobs are required, with which a modified iOS update file can then be created. However, this cannot be installed on devices newer than the iPhone 4 / iPod touch 4G, which means that any device released after the iPhone 4 / iPod touch 4G can no longer be downgraded. However, if iOS can be downgraded to an older version on a device, the modem firmware remains up-to-date, as it cannot be downgraded. The first iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the 3GS are partially excluded from this, as some modem firmware can also be downgraded on these devices by means of a jailbreak .
