Five Pearls is an American episode film based on short stories by O. Henry from 1952.

action

The Vagabond and Justice : Soapy is a homeless man in New York who tries everything to get himself locked in jail so he can be protected in the cold winter. When he gave up after a few unsuccessful attempts and wanted to change his life, he was suddenly picked up by the police and this time put in prison against his will.

The old guilt : Policeman Barney is indebted to crook Johnny. When Johnny commits a crime, Barney doesn't know whether to arrest the crook.

The last sheet : Joanna gets seriously ill from the cold and her sister Susan is taking care of her. The neighbor and painter Behrman helps by selling one of his paintings. Joanna's healing seems to depend on the resistance of the last leaves of the tree near the window against a winter storm.

The Ransom of Red Chief : Sam and Bill kidnap a young person, but he turns out to be smarter than the two of them and escapes.

The gift of love : A penniless young couple secretly chooses Christmas presents for their partner. The man moves his watch to buy a set of combs for his wife's beautiful long hair. However, this can be cut off the hair beforehand in order to be able to buy a watch chain for the man's watch.

background

The film was shown in German cinemas in 1953, one episode shortened under the title Vier Perlen . The Ransom of Red Chief by Howard Hawks was missing. The ZDF completed the film and broadcast it for the first time in 1986 completely and newly dubbed under the title Five Pearls . For the German DVD version of the film, the new dubbed version was only adopted for the extended episode.

John Steinbeck is the commentator in all parts.

Reviews

"Five different kinds of short stories by the American author O'Henry, staged by five directors at a considerable artistic level and above all appealing through their subtle humor and warm humanity."

“If you want to establish a ranking, Charles Laughton certainly does best in The Cop and the Anthem . His role is supposed to make the audience laugh, and with it he reaches the high standard of his joke ... Marilyn Monroe is as honey-sweet again as in Asphalt Jungle and plays an astonishingly well-proportioned street girl here. "

("By a process of elimination one comes back to Charles Laughton in The Cop and the Anthem , as best of the lot. His performance, though pitched to his standard of arch comedy, is clearly underlined for laughs ... Marilyn Monroe, again as sleek as she was in The Asphalt Jungle , is a streetwalker of stunning proportions. ")
