WW McDowell

William Wallace "WW" McDowell (born January 22, 1867 in Trenton , Gibson County , Tennessee , † April 9, 1934 in Dublin , Ireland ) was an American diplomat and politician . Between 1913 and 1921 he was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Montana and in 1934 Ambassador of the United States to the Free State of Ireland .

Career

WW McDowell was born in Tennessee and came to Montana at an unknown time, where he lived at least temporarily in the town of Butte . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He became a member of the Montana House of Representatives , of which he was president in 1909 and 1911.

In 1912, McDowell was elected lieutenant governor of Montana alongside Sam V. Stewart . He held this office between 1913 and 1921. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1920 he was a substitute delegate to the Democratic National Convention ; In 1932 he took part as a regular delegate to this event, at which Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated as a presidential candidate. In 1929 and 1931 he served as the Democratic President in Montana. In 1934 he was appointed American envoy to the Free State of Ireland, now the Republic of Ireland. When he took office, he snubbed the British government by ignoring their representatives and handing his letter of appointment directly to the Irish President. Just two weeks after taking office, McDowell died of heart failure at a banquet given in his honor. His body was transferred to America and buried in Memphis . Alvin M. Owsley succeeded him as envoy to Ireland .
