Hugh R. Adair

Hugh Rogers Adair (born August 27, 1889 in Trego County , Kansas , †  January 18, 1971 in Helena , Montana ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1937 and 1941 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Montana.

Career

Hugh Adair attended after high school until 1908, the Spaulding Commercial College in Kansas City ( Missouri ) and then to 1909 the Kansas State Normal College in West Branch . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and his admission as a lawyer in 1913, he began to work in Lewistown (Montana) in this profession. Before that, he worked there for a short time as a worker for the Milwaukee Railroad . During the First World War he served in the US Army between 1917 and 1919 . He then worked in Helena as a consultant for the Banking Corporation of Montana and as a criminal defense attorney. For four years he was the legal representative of the city of Helena; from 1921 to 1925 he served as a prosecutor in Lewis and Clark County . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He was elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 1927 and 1931 .

In 1936, Adair was elected lieutenant governor of Montana at the side of Roy E. Ayers . He held this office between 1937 and 1941. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1940 he was defeated in his party's primary election for the US House of Representatives . From 1943 to 1969 he was a judge on the Montana Supreme Court . Between 1947 and 1956 he was Chief Justice of that court. Adair was a member of numerous organizations and associations. He died on January 18, 1971 in Helena.
