Frank G. Higgins
Francis Grant "Frank" Higgins (born December 28, 1863 in Hell Gate , Missoula County , Montana , † October 15, 1905 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1905 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Montana.
Career
Frank Higgins attended the public schools in his home country until 1881. Then he graduated from a military school in Faribault . He then went to the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire . After studying law at the University of Michigan and being admitted to the bar in 1886, he began working in this profession in Missoula . While studying in Michigan, he successfully played college football . At the end of the 1880s he gave up his profession as a lawyer and entered the banking industry. He became president of the Higgins Bank in Missoula. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1889 and 1890 he was a member of the Montana House of Representatives . In 1892 he became mayor of Missoula. In the same year he took part as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , where ex- President Grover Cleveland was nominated as a presidential candidate.
During the Spanish-American War of 1898 , Higgins served in a cavalry unit in the United States Army . He was stationed in Georgia during the hot summer , where he contracted malaria . In 1900 he was elected lieutenant governor of Montana alongside Joseph Toole . He held this office between 1901 and 1905. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He died on October 15, 1905 in Portland of the long-term effects of his malaria.
