WWE Payback 2017 was a wrestling event of WWE , as per view Pay and on the WWE Network aired. It took place on April 30, 2017 at the SAP Center in San José , California , United States . It was the fifth edition of Payback since 2013. For the first time it took place in California and thus also in San José and in the SAP Center.

In the run-up to the event, eight matches were scheduled, one of which was for the pre-show . These resulted from the storylines that were shown on Raw in the weeks before Payback and, due to the Superstar Shake-up on April 10 and 11, 2017, also on SmackDown Live , two of the WWE's weekly shows. The main fight was a singles match between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman . Both met at Fastlane on March 5, 2017, when Reigns beat Strowman.

Notes on the event
- The following title changes occurred during the event:
- Chris Jericho defeated Kevin Owens in a singles match to win the WWE United States Championship ;
- Alexa Bliss defeated Bayley in a singles match to win the WWE Raw Women's Championship .
- Cesaro and Sheamus continued to attack after losing their title match against The Hardy Boyz ( Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy ).
- For the first time in WWE history, a House of Horrors match was played in which Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton met . The match began in a house outside the arena and was later continued inside the arena after the match between Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe . It ended with a win for Wyatt after Jinder Mahal , next challenger to the WWE Championship , which was not at stake in this match, attacked title holder Orton along with The Singh Brothers ( Samir Singh & Sunil Singh ).
- Braun Strowman also attacked his rival Roman Reigns after their match.
