Walther Ludwig (classical philologist)

Karl Rudolf Walther Ludwig (born February 9, 1929 in Stuttgart ) is a German classical and neo-Latin philologist.

Life

After graduating from the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium Stuttgart, Walther Ludwig studied classical philology , history and philosophy at the universities of Tübingen and Munich from 1948 . In 1955 he was charged with a gräzistischen work at the University of Tübingen Dr. phil. PhD. 1961 followed his habilitation at the University of Munich . From 1962 to 1963 he was a fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard University . From 1964 to 1970 he taught as a professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he was also director of the seminar for classical philology. From 1965-1970 he was editor and editor of the magazine Gnomon, a critical magazine for all classical studies . 1970-76 he was a professor at Columbia University in New York ( Chairman of the Department for Greek and Latin there ). Since 1976 he has been a professor at the University of Hamburg . In 1994 he retired. From 2000–03 he was ombudsperson at the University of Hamburg for the humanities and social sciences departments. He was visiting professor at Stanford University in Palo Alto (1966), at Columbia University in New York (1969), at the University of Tartu (2002), the University of Western Australia in Perth (2005) and the University of Warsaw (2007) inside. He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1970) and a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies (1974).

Research priorities

Since his dissertation, Ludwig has dealt with Greek tragedy (especially of Euripides ) and comedy (with an emphasis on Menander ) as well as Hellenistic epigrammatics. He also deals with the Roman comedy of Plautus and Terence as well as the writings of Horace , Ovid and Prudentius under the aspects of edition and interpretation, structure and intertextuality. He also deals with modern Latin literature, research on humanism and the Renaissance, Latin in everyday life in the early modern period, Latin texts in the history of churches, art, medicine and universities, and Latin in contemporary society and the sciences. Another field of activity is the history of classical philology , especially during the National Socialist era. He also published studies on regional history in southern Germany and on genealogy.

Ludwig is a member of the Mommsen Society , of which he was first chairman from 1978-83, the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (President 1988-91), the Fédération Internationale des Associations d'Études Classiques (Vice President 1989-94), des International committee of the Wolfenbüttel working group for Renaissance research, the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences in Hamburg, the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg , the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , the Academy of Non-Profit Sciences in Erfurt (co-chair of the Commission for Humanism Research ), the Braunschweig scientists Society and the Academia Europaea in London. He is also an honorary member of the Polish Philological Society.
