Washington Capitols was the name of a US basketball franchise from Washington, DC , District of Columbia that played in the BAA , later the NBA , from 1946 to 1951 .
history
The Capitols were one of the founding teams of the BAA and were represented in the league from the start. In the first season, the Capitols were able to achieve one of the highest win rates in NBA history to date with 81.7 percent in the regular season. The team was thus safely qualified for the play-offs and lost there in the first round, the semifinals, against the Chicago Stags . The following season the Capitols were less successful and were last in the Western Division. But in the next season the Capitols were first in the Eastern Division and were able to reach the play-offs again. After victories against Philadelphia and New York , the team even reached the BAA Finals . The team lost the best-of-seven series with 2-4 against the new league, the Minneapolis Lakers . After this season, coach Red Auerbach left the team and joined the Tri-Cities Blackhawks . That's why Bob Feerick was appointed player- coach. This was able to lead the team into the play-offs, but failed there in the first round due to the New York Knickerbockers . Last season, Bones McKinney, a new player, tried to coach himself and had little success. On January 9, 1951, the Capitols were dissolved during the season with an interim balance of 10-25. The NBA did not return to Washington until the 1973/74 season , when the Baltimore Bullets became the Capital Bullets and were to play in Washington from then on.
