The Westerwaldbahn des Kreis Altenkirchen GmbH ( WEBA, Westerwaldbahn GmbH ) is a regional transport company owned by the Altenkirchen district (Westerwald) in Rhineland-Palatinate . The company provides local public transport services by bus and train in the Altenkirchen district. The seat is in Steinebach / Sieg . It is a railway infrastructure company (EIU) and a railway transport company (EVU). Westerwaldbahn GmbH transports around 365,000 people annually and also operates two travel centers in the Wissen (Sieg) and train stationsAu (victory) .

history

On October 1, 1914, the district took over the management of the Scheuerfeld – Emmerzhausen railway line and ran it as the district's own operation until May 25, 1999 as the Westerwaldbahn of the Altenkirchen district . On this day the Westerwaldbahn of the Altenkirchen district was converted into a GmbH . In 1914, there were three quadruple coupled steam locomotives, four two-axle passenger cars, a mail / baggage car and 24 two-axle freight cars for operation. For decades, passenger traffic only played a subordinate role, this was also due to the remote location of the train stations. Apart from numerous special trips, it was discontinued until October 30, 1960, as a bus network that had been built up since 1949 supplies sufficient supplies to the communities in the catchment area.

Since November 2, 1994, the company has been operating passenger transport by rail again on the 10 km long Betzdorf – Daaden line . The infrastructure has been assigned to the Westerwaldbahn by Deutsche Bahn AG and has been renovated by the latter with state subsidies.

The Westerwaldbahn operated regular freight traffic between Scheuerfeld (Sieg) and Weitefeld until July 2017. The remaining sections have been out of service since 1970. However, until the end of 2017, WEBA operated freight traffic on the DB Altenkirchen – Raubach route . Since 2006, the further section to Selters (Westerw) , which is now owned by the Westerwaldbahn, has been used again by freight traffic.

Transport network

Since the Daadetalbahn railway line runs in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district, the tariff of the Rhein-Mosel transport association (VRM) applies to its trains . The tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) is also valid as a transitional tariff on the Daadetalbahn trains, provided the start / destination station of the journey is in the VRS area. The Deutsche Bahn tariff applies to trips beyond the boundaries of the network. The Rhineland-Palatinate tickets and the Quer-durch-Land-Ticket are also valid on the trains . The Westerwaldbahn is a member of the tariff association of federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE), which organizes tariff recognition and revenue sharing between non-federally owned railways and Deutsche Bahn.

Freight transport

In addition to goods traffic on the main route (Scheuerfeld (Sieg) - Bindweide - Oberdreisbach), the Westerwaldbahn also carried out goods traffic on the Sieg route or the Dill route . The handling of goods handling and journeys was carried out on behalf of DB Cargo . Occasional shunting services were carried out for the Siegen-Wittgenstein district railway .

In June 2017, the Altenkirchen district council decided to discontinue freight transport by the district's own Westerwaldbahn. Traffic on the main line was stopped at the end of July and on the Holzbachtalbahn on December 31st.

vehicles

In 1956 the Westerwaldbahn received the first diesel locomotives of the type R 30 B from the Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik , in 1957 and 1959 a further example followed. They were listed as V 26.1–4. They were shut down between 1998 and 2017 (1: 2015, 2: 1995, 3: 2017, 4: 1998).

In 1999 and 2006 two OnRail DH 1004s were bought for traffic on the Holzbachtalbahn, they were given the numbers 5 and 07.

The modernized GTW 2/6 with vehicle numbers 525 116–118, which were taken over and modernized by HLB , have been running on the Daadetalbahn since May 9, 2016 .

Holdings

The Westerwaldbahn held a 33.33% stake in Hellertalbahn GmbH and 25.1% in vectus Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH. Both railway companies have ceased operations after losing tenders for local rail passenger transport. The Hellertalbahn is in liquidation.
