action
Benjamin Barry works for a New York advertising agency. He bets his boss and his colleagues that he can get journalist Andie Anderson to fall in love with him within ten days. If he succeeds, he will be charged with organizing the advertising campaign for a diamond trading company.
Andie Anderson is researching for an article about the tricks a woman can use to end a relationship. She uses these tricks on Barry. Among other things, she prevents him from watching a basketball game that was very important to him, "decorates" his apartment on the first visit, when the two get intimate, she calls his penis Princess Sophia and appears unannounced at his men's poker evening. After an argument, he suggests couples therapy to Andie to buy time. Andie leads him to meet her friend Michelle Rubin, who plays a relationship therapist. There intimate details of the relationship are discussed.
Barry introduces Andie to his family. It turns out that she is the first woman with whom he visited his family. There Andie learns the card game nonsense , in which the aim is to see through the playing partners. The whole family helps Andie win against him.
At a party, Barry and Andie learn the truth about their relationship and then argue publicly. Andie writes the article in which she speaks openly about her feelings about Benjamin. Her boss is enthusiastic, but she still refuses to allow Andie to write about serious topics. Andie quits and wants to fly to Washington, DC to apply there. Barry reads the article, catches up with Andie, who is driving a taxi, and tries to persuade her to stay in New York. Andie denies her feelings for him, and Benjamin says nonsense - as in a card game . She agrees to return to town with him.
Reviews
James Berardinelli criticized on ReelViews that the film lacks a love story between the “cheap laughs”. In places it looks like the comedy The War of the Roses , but doesn't have the "courage" of Danny DeVito's film because the director wants the audience to like both of the main characters. Kate Hudson played "very well", but with a "shockingly limited range" of means of expression. Matthew McConaughey looks so good that you don't want to question his acting skills.
“A largely successful comedy that pointedly holds up the mirror to the sexes without discrediting them. Only at the moment when she succumbs to the romantic conventions of the genre does she noticeably flatten out into an emotionally lukewarm piece. "
“Unfortunately everything about this love comedy is predictable and terribly old-fashioned. If it weren't for the new actors, you'd be dealing with an underground TV adaptation of the conventional kind. "
Awards
David Newman won the BMI Film Music Award . Kate Hudson was nominated for the MTV Movie Award and the Teen Choice Award (in four categories). Matthew McConaughey was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in two categories, Michael Michele was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in one category.
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
