Wonderland is the twelfth music album and eighth studio album by the English band Take That . They released it with Polydor Records on March 24, 2017. The album sold 113,200 copies in the first week and already received a gold record for this, but rose after a head-to-head race with Ed Sheeran's "÷" Number two on the UK charts. For the first time since their debut album in 1992, the band failed to top the charts with their studio album. The album was preceded by the lead single Giants on February 17, 2017 , reaching number 13 on the singles chart and number 4 on the iTunes download charts. For the first time since 1993 ( Everything Changes ), the band also released a vinyl version of the album. The second single "New Day" followed on April 27th.

The associated concert tour began on May 5, 2017 and was extended several times in 2016 in response to high demand; 32 arena and stadium concerts in Great Britain are now scheduled for May and June 2017, 27 of which are sold out. At the end of the year, some concerts will follow in oceanic cities, including Sydney , Perth , Auckland and Wellington . Until the beginning of May, only eight concerts were announced in the southern hemisphere, the advance booking has not yet started. One of the sold-out concerts in London's O 2 arena will be broadcast live in 388 European cities on June 9, 2017, including 15 locations in Germany. Thanks to the broadcast in over 450 cinemas, around 100,000 additional fans will be able to enjoy affordable spectator seats that evening alone. This concept had already proven itself on the Take That Live 2015 tour, although many concerts were also held on mainland Europe that year.

In February 2016, Barlow announced in an interview with the Sun that Take That would release their eighth studio album later this year, followed by another greatest hits compilation in 2017 for the silver anniversary (25th anniversary) of their debut album. Commenting on the possibility of Williams and Orange returning, he said, “A greatest hits album from all of them would be fantastic, of course, but I can't see Jason returning to the limelight in the next few years. But if Rob would join in, that would be great. ”Instead of the planned pure greatest hits compilation album 2017, the band released the anniversary album (on the occasion of the band's 30th anniversary) Odyssey at the end of 2018, followed by a European tour in 2019, which also includes a few new songs Contains modified new recordings and remixes of their greatest hits. Take That still consists of Barlow, Donald and Owen - a studio collaboration with former members Williams or Orange was no longer promised after the above interview.

On October 22nd, 2016, after several unofficial hints, the new studio album Wonderland was finally released for pre-order. The band enlisted the support of several producers for their album, including Tony Hoffer and Mike Crossey and Stuart Price , who had already worked on several albums ( Progress and subsequent ones) with the band. The album also announced a tour of the same name, initially with 21 stages (May 8 to June 16, 2017) in nine British arenas. The band also made it clear that neither Robbie Williams nor Jason Orange would return to the group for the album and tour . For buyers of the album within the first two days, early access to the concert tickets was activated on October 26th and 27th, and the official advance sale opened on the 28th. Many of the arenas were already sold out through advance booking, so three more dates were added on October 28th. Eight more concert dates were added within a week. All Saints will appear as the opening act for all concerts . On February 10, 2017, the first single with the title "Giants" was announced and released for pre-order, at this time 27 of the 32 scheduled concerts were already sold out.

The lead single "Giants" was released on February 17, 2017. It reached number 13 on the UK singles chart, and the accompanying video appeared on the band's Vevo YouTube channel on March 15th. Five days later, the band appeared on James Corden's Late Late Show in the United States . There they shot a quarter-hour carpool karaoke clip with Corden and later appeared live with "Giants" in the main show. The three singers also appeared in the television show Saturday Night Takeaway by the comedy duo Ant & Dec and The One Show and presented their new album, "Giants", among others.

The song "Cry", a collaboration with the British D'n'B duo SIGMA , which had already been released as a single on May 20, 2016, was chosen as one of four bonus tracks of the Deluxe Edition of the album . The airplay rights were secured on the day of publication by both Radio 1 and Radio 2 , which is extraordinary due to the very different target groups. The single entered the top 5 of the UK download charts and reached number 21 on the official single charts, and Radio 2 named it record of the week after it was released. On May 28, a related music video was released on the YouTube channel of 3beat, the Sigma duo's label. It shows the three singers and the DJ duo at the scene of a street race and Arab drifting festival . The five musicians performed live with the piece for the first time on May 28th on the main stage of the open-air music festival BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Exeter .

trip

On October 22nd, 2016, Take That opened the advance booking of their next nationwide tour with the announcement of their new album. The first part of the Wonderland Live 2017 tour started on May 5th at the Genting Arena in Birmingham and is expected to end on June 16, 2017 at Carrow Road Stadium, Norwich . The tour has so far included 32 largely sold-out concerts in stadiums and arenas in 10 UK cities . Due to the terrorist attack in Manchester on May 22nd 2017 , three concerts planned for May 25th, 26th and 27th 2017 at the Manchester Arena have been postponed indefinitely.

In spring 2017, further concerts were announced at the end of the year, this time in the southern hemisphere, which turns the concert tour into a world tour. Eight concerts in Australia and New Zealand had already been announced by the beginning of May, and advance sales have not yet started. The band had not performed live in Oceania since 1995.

reception

Commercial win

Wonderland lost the race to Ed Sheeran's album ÷ despite an exceptionally high sales of 113,200 units in the first week . With the exception of their debut album Take That & Party , which also reached number 2 in 1993, every album by the band had so far conquered the top of the charts. Like all previous albums, Wonderland stayed in the top 5 for a few weeks. It received the BPI gold record in the first week . In the annual charts, Wonderland already passed the soundtracks to La La Land and Trolls , Coldplay's A Head Full of Dreams and Robbie Williams ' The Heavy Entertainment Show and after the first quarter already ranks 6th and 3rd in CD sales. It came third in Ireland and second in Scotland.

Reviews

David Smyth, music critic for the London Evening Standard , gave positive feedback and three stars on the grounds that the album was "enough to excite the masses and everything else [is] the same." He wrote, "Your eighth album feels as we are used to from them: with a full sound, rich in arm-swinging choruses and gently encouraging lyrics such as' Music makes me feel good ',' We can conquer any mountain ',' Every morning is a brand new day 'etc. "
