Vysschaya League 1972

The Vysschaya League 1973 was the 35th season of the highest Soviet football league. It lasted from April 7 to November 2, 1973. In this season, the Armenian club Ararat Yerevan was able to win its first and only Soviet championship, which is still considered one of the greatest successes in the club's history, especially since they also won the 1973 Soviet Football Cup .

The 16 teams each played against each other twice. The last two teams were relegated. Tied games were decided by a penalty shoot-out, only the winner received one point.

overview

In the 1973 season, last year's fourth Ararat Yerevan sat unexpectedly at the top of the table under coach Nikita Simonjan . Yerevan had been in the top half of the table in previous years, but had never won a Soviet title in the club's history. On the first day of the match, Ararat defeated last year's runner-up, Dynamo Kiev, 3-1. After some teething problems in the following games, Yerevan established itself as the top team in the course of the season. A direct encounter between Ararat and Kiev took place again on matchday 21, which Dynamo now won 3-1 thanks to the good performance of the future star striker Oleg Blochin . Nevertheless, at the end of the season, Ararat was clearly the champion and Kiev had to be satisfied with the position as runner-up again. Last year's champion Sarja Voroshilovgrad landed only in seventh place in the table.

At the end of the season, the far behind FK SKA Rostov and Dinamo Minsk were relegated .

Although Ararat also won the Soviet Cup in 1973, the starting place for the 1974/75 European Cup Winners' Cup went to Dynamo Kiev, as Yerevan had already qualified for participation in the 1974/75 European Cup .
