The Taça da Liga (English: League Cup), officially known as the Carlsberg Cup[1] is competition organized by the Portuguese League for Professional Football started in the 2007/08 football season.[2] It was proposed by Sporting Clube de Portugal and Boavista F.C. in 2006 and unanimously approved by all clubs from the Portuguese professional leagues in a meeting in Porto on 28 November, 2006. All teams of the two levels of professional football, Portuguese Liga and Liga de Honra, participate in this competition. The first winner and current holder is Vitória de Setúbal who defeated Sporting Clube de Portugal 3-2 on penalties.

Format

After the first edition, a change in the format was approved by the Portuguese League for Professional Football.[3] The Cup will begin with a two-legged round between teams of Liga Vitalis (Liga de Honra – 2nd level). Winners will join the 7th-14th classified clubs from last season's BWINLiga (Portuguese Liga, 1st level) plus the 2 promoted to the BWINLiga last season. There will be 6 groups of 3 teams each, and every team will play 2 games, one home and the other away. The winner of the groups will join the top-6 teams of the previous season BWINLiga and there will be 3 groups of 4 teams, each team playing 3 games. The winners of the groups and the best second placed will meet in the semi-finals, in a single-leg game, the winners advancing to the final.
