The École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort is a university specializing in veterinary medicine in Maisons-Alfort near Paris . It belongs to the Grandes écoles ("Great Schools") of France and reports to the Ministry of Agriculture. There are three other national colleges for veterinary training in Lyon , Nantes and Toulouse .

The university offers a seven-year course for a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine. This is recognized in France and in the European Union . Postgraduate courses are also possible. The training takes place in three specialist areas (pharmacy and biology, animal production and public health, rearing and pathology). There is also a clinical department and a research department.
history
The college was founded in 1765 at the instigation of Claude Bourgelat as École vétérinaire . Its first director was Honoré Fragonard , who, together with some students from the veterinary school, moved from Lyon to Paris, where the new institution was initially established. On the one hand for reasons of space and on the other hand to allow undisturbed operation, she soon moved on to Alfort, where classes began in autumn 1766. The school was designed as a boarding school .
Since the university has not changed its headquarters since 1766, many references to the time it was founded have been preserved. This includes some original buildings, a botanical garden , a sculpture park and the library with a large number of old holdings. Together with the school, the Cabinet du Roi was set up in 1766 , in which the anatomical specimens for teaching were stored and displayed. A museum developed from this collection, which is still part of the university as the Musée Fragonard .
