action

In 1961, Jeremy Thorpe , a member of the British Parliament , met a young man named Norman Josiffe . He works as a stable boy in Oxfordshire and likes Jeremy straight away. He wrote several love letters to Norman, who soon moved to live with him in London . Since Norman does not have a social security card and can therefore not pursue a long-term, registered job, he becomes increasingly unstable and he also tends to be melodramatic and self-portrayal , which puts a strain on his relationship with Jeremy. The two finally split up after several years. Norman is extremely angry about this and gives all the letters that Jeremy had written him to the police.

Four years later, Jeremy is blackmailed by his former lover, who threatens to publicize their relationship. Jeremy fears the end of his career and persuades his colleague Peter Bessell to transfer larger amounts of money to Norman. He also requires a new social security card, but Jeremy refuses, as this could possibly establish a connection between them.

In 1968 Jeremy was elected party chairman, and he is also the youngest man in a century to hold this office. He marries the young, naive Caroline Allpass, and the two soon become parents of a son. Meanwhile, Norman, who now bears the surname Scott, is unable to stay in a job or relationship. He is an alcoholic and a drug addict . His only bright spot are horses and dogs , which he occasionally looks after. Since he is angry with Jeremy, he calls Caroline and tells her about his love affair with her husband, she accepts this confession in disbelief, but remains with Jeremy.

Two years later, Caroline dies in a car accident . As he mourns his wife, Jeremy considers having Norman murdered . However, these plans are repeatedly postponed due to temporal circumstances. Norman tries again to apply for a social security card, but fails at the responsible office due to the stubbornness and ignorance of the employees. Peter Bessell got into financial difficulties because of the payments to Norman and has therefore moved to the United States .

In 1973, Jeremy married Marion Stein, a noblewoman and Countess of Harewood, which promotes him in the political hierarchy . When Jeremy meets Norman by chance on the street some time later, he panics and assigns David Holmes, a former fellow student in Oxford , to kill Normans. This is the task to Andrew Newton on, the for 10,000 pounds gets. However, Newton fails miserably and only manages to let Norman's dog die. Norman immediately reports the crime to the police and is convinced that Jeremy had something to do with it.

In 1976 the so-called Thorpe Affair took place. Jeremy is convicted of attempted harm to Norman. When he asks the police to give him two of Norman's love letters, Jeremy himself has them published and gives an opinion on their content. In May he resigned from the office of party chairman, and he also lost his seat in parliament to Anthony Speller , a member of the Conservative party .

Three years later, Jeremy, David, and two other co-defendants face trial for a murder conspiracy . Your defense will be taken over by George Carmen , who is known for his relentless pleading and interviewing witnesses. The press participates in the process with great interest and does not leave out even the smallest details in its reporting. Norman says on the witness stand that he only demands two things: a social security card and that his story be heard. The biased Judge Cantley cares little. He influences the jury in favor of Jeremys, who find him and his co-conspirators not guilty.

In the credits it is mentioned what happened to those involved: Jeremy Thorpe, who never again held a public office, spent the rest of his life with Marion Stein until her death on March 6, 2014, he died on December 4 of the same year. Peter Bessell lived in the USA until his death in 1985. Norman Josiffe now lives with eleven dogs and still does not have a social security card.

Although artistic freedom is “all well and good”, the plot is not its story. He also didn't like the funny moments, since there was nothing funny about attempted murder. According to Scott, he was portrayed as a "poor, affected, little gay person" and had never been a pushover, as was seen in A Very English Scandal .
