The Aeroparque Jorge Newbery is the city airport of Buenos Aires . It is located in the Palermo district on the banks of the Río de la Plata . Its IATA code is AEP and ICAO code is SABE . The IATA collective code for the domestic and international airports of Buenos Aires is BUE .
The airport was named after the Argentine aviation pioneer and engineer Jorge Newbery (* 1875, † 1914).
The "Aeroparque", as it is mostly called, is mainly used for domestic flights. It has the function of the most important hub in the Argentine air traffic: Many domestic connections provide for a change at this airport. But international flights to neighboring countries are also carried out.
history
After a long planning period, the airport was opened in 1947 and the terminal was completed in 1951. The airport has had to contend with chronic congestion since the 1980s , which cannot be resolved by an expansion, as there are important roads and residential areas around the airport. In the 1990s it was considered to expand the airport by creating an artificial island on the Río de la Plata, a so-called aeroisla . However, this project came to nothing, as did the proposal to close the airport completely and instead greatly expand the more remote Ezeiza airport . Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 has operated the airport since 1999
On August 31, 1999, there was a major plane crash. A Boeing 737-200 of the Líneas Aéreas Privadas Argentinas crashed shortly after take-off. 65 people were killed.
At the end of 2010, the airport was closed for several weeks and given a general overhaul. The runway in particular has been renewed.

Incidents
- On May 7, 1981, a BAC 1-11-529FR of the Austral Líneas Aéreas ( aircraft registration LV-LOX ) crashed into the Río de la Plata while approaching Buenos Aires-Jorge Newbery Airport , whereby none of the 31 people on board survived the accident . In the vicinity of a violent thunderstorm, the pilots lost control of the aircraft.
- On August 31, 1999, a Boeing 737-200 of Líneas Aéreas Privadas Argentinas (LV-WRZ) had an accident while taking off from Buenos Aires-Jorge Newbery Airport. Due to their general lack of discipline in the cockpit, the flight crew overlooked the fact that they had forgotten to correctly set the buoyancy aids for take-off. Although a high-pitched warning signal sounded when accelerating, which drew the crew's attention to their mistake, they did not abort the take-off process. The machine barely lifted off the ground, shot over the end of the runway, pulled a passing car with its engine and crashed into an industrial gas plant, which then exploded. 63 of the 103 occupants of the machine and the two people in the car were killed (see also LAPA flight 3142 ) .
