Ahmet Ceyhan , wrongly referred to by some sources as Ahmet Ceylan , (born January 26, 1951 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He was an important and constant member of the Trabzonspor team that became the first Anatolian team to win the Turkish championship, and was a member of the club's great team for seven seasons, which, nicknamed Karadeniz Fırtınası , dominated Turkish football for a decade from 1975 onwards . During this time he was involved in five of the total of six Turkish championships Trabzonspors. He also enrolled in the club annals at Galatasaray Istanbul , for which he played five years. He was part of the team that was able to win the Turkish championship again after fourteen years of waiting in the 1986/87 season . He is still known today by his nickname Çaycı Ahmet ( Eng . Ahmet, the tea host or Ahmet, the tea room operator ), which he received incorrectly because of a newspaper duck .

Family and childhood

There are different information about Ceyhan's place of birth. Some sources indicate the location Nargize the province of Elazig as birth, while others Istanbul specify as the birthplace. It is unanimously stated that he grew up in Istanbul. Here he attended the Tarık-Us primary school (Turkish Tarık Us İlkokulu ) and then the Gelenbevi High School (Turkish Gelenbevi Ortaokulu ). For reasons unknown, he had to leave the latter after the second year.

Player career

society

In 1966, Ceyhan began at the Istanbul amateur club Dikilitaş SK with club football and then played for city rivals Haliç SK and Üsküdar Anadolu SK . With the latter he played in the 3rd Futbol Ligi , the third highest division.

In the summer of 1973 he moved to the northern Turkish first division club Giresunspor . At this club, he quickly established himself as a regular player and was quickly considered one of the youngsters in the league.

After two years for Giresunspor, he moved to league rivals Trabzonspor in the summer of 1975 . In his first season with this club, the 1975/76 season , he and his team surprisingly reached the Turkish championship. Up until this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray decided the Turkish championship among themselves. Although another Anatolian club, Eskişehirspor, narrowly missed the championship three times, the ban remained. It was only solved with Trabzonspor's championship. In addition to the championship, they also reached the final of the Turkish Football Cup and just lost to Galatasaray Istanbul . Ceyhan made 17 league appearances in this first season. After this championship, the league was dominated the next season and, in addition to the championship, collected all the other trophies in Turkish football by winning the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup . As a result, Ceyhan was also part of the team that won the first Turkish double victory in the club's history. One also attracted attention on the European football stage. In the second round of the European Cup , the reigning English champions and later Champions League winners Liverpool FC . Liverpool were considered one of the best teams in European football at the time and were the big favorites for these encounters. Trabzonspor surprisingly won their first game in Trabzon 1-0. The second leg was lost 3-0. It was not until the 1977/78 season that the championship was awarded to Fenerbahçe with a point difference, but the two other trophies were won. Ceyhan increased his performance this season and was promoted to the Turkish national team.

Trabzonspor got into great financial difficulties at this time and saw the solution in selling some stars. In addition, they wanted to create a revision in the team. Stars like Ali Kemal Denizci and Kadir Özcan left the club. Ceyhan, who grew up in Istanbul and had his family, also expressed the wish to switch to the traditional club Galatasaray Istanbul in the summer of 1978. Trabzonspor, however, referred to the current contract with Ceyhan and refused to change. Ceyhan stayed with Trabzonspor and at the end of the 1978/79 season again won the Turkish Championship and the President's Cup , an earlier version of the later Turkish Supercup . In the next season, the 1979/80 season , he succeeded with his club to defend the title in the Turkish championship and in the President's Cup. Ceyhan lost his regular place this season and played 14 competitive games this season. In the following season, Ceyhan's team managed to defend their title in the Turkish championship. As a result, Trabzonspor was the second club after Galatasaray Istanbul to win the Turkish championship three times in a row. In this 1980/81 season Ceyhan found back in the regular formation and completed 26 competitive games. After these successful three seasons, Ceyhan lost his regular place again and played ten competitive games over the course of the season. Since his club had also remained untitled, another roster revision was decided.

Ceyhan was not put on the sales list even after this new squad revision and started the 1982/83 Trabzonspor season, but finally moved to Galatasaray Istanbul at the end of November 1982. He immediately established himself as a regular at his new employer. The decisive factor in this change was the fact that Galatasaray had been coached by Özkan Sümer since the summer of 1981 , and was able to get the coach with the Trabzonspor of his last championships and who had already bet on Ceyhan. By the end of the season, he completed almost all of his team's competitive games and formed Fatih Terim and Raşit Çetiner , with whom he was to play together almost until the end of his career, the defensive line of Galatasaray. At the time of his move, Galatasaray had lost touch with the other top teams and was more of a follower. After the last championship in the season 1972/73 they tried in vain to build on these successes. His team played for a long time in the 1982/83 season for the championship, but lost the connection towards the end of the season and finished the league in 3rd place in the table.

For the 1983/84 season , Tomislav Ivić was hired as a new coach. This expressed the desire to see Demiriz in his team. Ceyhan was also used regularly under this coach, but again missed the championship with his team and ended the season third in the table. For the upcoming season, the 1984/85 season , the club's management surprisingly succeeded in signing the resigned national coach Jupp Derwall . With this coach, numerous new signings were also decided. So among other things were for the two full-back positions , the two young and promising player İsmail Demiriz (right-back) and Semih Yuvakuran (left-back) committed. Despite this new competition and the fact that Ceyhan was the oldest player on his team at 33, he made 23 league appearances. His club remained in the league with the 5th place in the table again below expectations, but won the Turkish Football Cup . In his second season under Derwall, 1985/86 season , Ceyhan increased his number to 28. His team delivered this season with arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul until the last day of a close head-to-head race for the Turkish championship and lost the championship because of the worse goal difference to Beşiktaş. The next season the long-awaited success came and so Ceyhan was part of the Galatasaray team that won the championship for the first time in 14 years. After this success, Ceyhan ended his career.

National team

Ceyhan was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team in September 1978 by the national coach Sabri Kiraz as part of a friendly match against the Italian national team and made his international debut in this encounter. Then it was no longer considered.

In November 1978 he completed his second and last assignment for the Turkish national team as part of a qualifying game for the 1980 European Championship .

Coaching career

Ceyhan began working as a coach for the first time in 1994 and assisted the head coach Kadri Aytaç at the Istanbul second division club İstanbulspor . He then worked for the clubs Trabzon Yalıspor and Maltepespor as head coach.

In July 1996 he started working as an assistant coach at Galatasaray Istanbul and supported the new head coach Fati Terim , with whom he had been a player for Galatasaray for several years. At the end of August 1996, he switched to the youth department at this club and worked there as a youth coach for three years.

In August 1999 he accepted the offer of the Istanbul second division side Bakırköyspor and worked for the first time as a head coach. In November 1999 he left this club again.

After Fatih Terim took over the post of head coach of Galatasaray for the second time in the summer of 2002, Ceyhan was hired as one of his assistant coaches. In this position he remained in office until March 2004.

From February 2000 to May 2000 he worked at Göztepe Izmir as assistant coach to Celal Kıbrızlı and from June 2000 to April 2001 at Samsunspor as assistant to Bülent Ünder .

After working at Adana Demirspor as assistant coach to Soner Tolungüç from August 2010 to February 2011 , he took over Ünyespor in the summer of 2011 . After just one month, he left this club again at the end of September 2011.

After Fatih Terim was appointed Turkish national coach in August 2013, Ceyhan also started working for the Turkish Football Association . At the end of 2013 he was in charge of the Turkish U-20 national team .

In December 2014 he took over the Turkish U-16 national team. At the beginning of 2015 he took part with this in the Aegean Cup and finished this tournament as the winner.

Trivia

  • Disappointed in the summer of 1978 not having received approval for a move from Trabzonspor to Galatasaray, Ceyhan deliberately missed the season opening of Trabzonspor and instead continued his vacation in the holiday resort of Uludağ . Here he was asked by a sports journalist why he did not take part in the Trabzonspors season opening. Ceyhan then informed the journalist that he wanted to play for Galatasaray. The journalist then took some photos and said goodbye to Ceyhan with the remark that he should fill in the missing parts of the interview himself. The next day the daily newspaper for which the journalist had worked quoted Ceyhan as saying "I would rather run a tea room instead of continuing to play for Trabzonspor". After Ceyhan finally switched to Galatasaray in 1982, he was greeted by fans as Çaycı Ahmet ( Eng . Ahmet, the tea host or Ahmet, the tea room operator ). He kept this nickname for the rest of his playing and coaching career.
