The list of honorary graves of the city of Kassel contains all 71 honorary graves , which are maintained and cared for by the environmental and garden department of the city of Kassel in cooperation with the cemetery administration at the city's expense. Honorary graves are given to the deceased who have distinguished themselves with special merits during their lives. A grave of honor is marked by a horizontal stone tablet with the name of the person buried and the words "Ehrengrab der Stadt Kassel".

The 64 honorary graves are distributed among the cemeteries Altstädter Friedhof (6), Hauptfriedhof (40), Harleshausen (2), Kirchditmold (1), Niederzwehren (2), Wahlershausen (4), Wehlheiden (8), the Israelite cemetery in Bettenhausen ( 4), Bettenhausen cemetery (1), Wolfsanger cemetery (1), Nordfriedhof (1) and the Bad Arolsen-Schmillinghausen cemetery (1).

Graves of honor have existed in Kassel since the 1920s. An appraisal is made based on the proposal of the culture commission and the corresponding resolution of the city council of Kassel. However, people are not automatically honored with an honorary grave who were granted honorary citizenship of the city during their lifetime. Both awards exist independently of one another.

For the 1100th anniversary of the city of Kassel in 2013, a project documented the graves of honor and the biographies of those honored.

Old Town Cemetery (Lutherplatz)

The Altstädter Friedhof (on today's Lutherplatz ) is a cemetery in the center of Kassel. It was created on the site on which the Luther Church was later built. Until the end of 1848 it was the main cemetery in Kassel's old town outside the city walls and was replaced by the new main cemetery on Tannenheckerweg. In the cemetery, which was closed after the last burial on June 30, 1843, there are some impressive gravestones and memorials to the dead.

Main cemetery

The main cemetery is the largest cemetery in Kassel. It is 40 hectares and is located in the district of North Holland . It was opened on July 2, 1843 in front of the Dutch Gate and outside the city limits at that time and replaced the Old Town cemetery at the Luther Church . Initially, twelve departments were laid out in a geometric shape. The avenue-like path axes are set up at right angles. The mausoleum was put into operation when the cemetery was opened. It is a representative crypt building with an above-ground foyer and underground burial chambers.

On October 22, 1953, a new cemetery of honor with 171 grave crosses with 3000 names was inaugurated. From the time of the Second World War there is a bomb casualty field as testimony to the devastating bomb attacks and their victims. The old cemetery chapel, which was located on today's Halit Square, was bombed in 1943 and demolished in 1950. As early as 1926, a new cemetery chapel with a mortuary, workshops and administration building at the end of Karolinenstrasse was put into operation. These buildings were also bombed during World War II and were later rebuilt on the old floor plans. In 2000 a new crematorium was inaugurated on the farm yard and in 2005 the administration building was rebuilt and renovated. The largest number of honorary graves are located in the main cemetery.

Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish cemetery in Bettenhausen is one of several Jewish burial sites. There are currently two existing and well-maintained Jewish cemeteries of the Jewish communities in Kassel, which are located in the Bettenhausen district. The old Jewish cemetery is maintained by the cemetery administration of the city of Kassel. The New Jewish Cemetery is still a burial site and is financed through fees.

The Harleshausen cemetery was inaugurated in 1911. The old cemetery chapel dates from this time and was extensively restored in the 2000s by a non-profit association. The new cemetery chapel was built on behalf of the city of Kassel by the architects Seidel and Kluthe in 1982 in Wegmannstrasse and has 130 seats.

Kirchditmold cemetery

The Kirchditmold cemetery was built around 1860 below the Kirchditmold church on the southern slope of a limestone ridge. The round cemetery chapel with a conical slate roof has a capacity of 38 seats and is a listed building.

Niederzwehren cemetery

The cemetery in Niederzwehren is located on the waiting hill and was opened in 1850. The cemetery chapel was donated by the Credé family of industrialists at the beginning of the 20th century and has 90 seats. The cemetery was expanded several times in a north-easterly direction.

Wahlershausen cemetery

The Wahlershausen cemetery is located in the Bad Wilhelmshöhe district of Kassel on the southern slope of the Rammelsberg . It opened in 1865. Almost at the top of the steep cemetery is the cemetery chapel, which was put into operation in the 1920s and has a capacity of 48 seats.

Wehlheiden cemetery

The Wehlheiden cemetery is the largest district cemetery in Kassel and, after the main cemetery, the second largest cemetery in Kassel. It is divided into two halves by Sternbergstrasse. The southern part is the so-called new cemetery. It was put into operation in 1833 and then expanded several times. No opening year is known of the half-timbered chapel. It has 60 seats. At the northern entrance there is a large, broad sandstone with the inscription:

"This church field was laid out under the early Greben Nicolaus Kersten and inaugurated by the pastor Gottfried Fenner on April 3rd, 1833"

Wolfsanger cemetery

The Wolfsanger cemetery was laid out in 1858 above the old town center. Due to the terrain, the cemetery consists of two terraces. Both parts of the cemetery are connected by a ramp. The lower part is the older, the upper the new part, on which the cemetery chapel, made of sandstone quarries , stands. It has a capacity of 60 seats.

North Cemetery

The north cemetery is on the edge of the city of Kassel towards the community of Fuldatal. As the capacity of the main cemetery threatened to be exhausted at the end of the 1970s, the north cemetery was created. In the summer of 1984 it and the cemetery chapel with 100 seats were inaugurated. In 2004 the cemetery was expanded to the north.
