Antofagasta plc is a Chilean mining company based in the UK . The company mainly mines copper , but also molybdenum and gold . It is at the Exchange London Stock exchange-listed and 100 FTSE listed.

Company history

The group began in 1888 as the railway company Antofagasta (Chili) and Bolivia Railway Company (today Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia , abbreviated FCAB ). The company, founded by British investors, built a rail link, which it still owns today, to transport the copper ore between the Pacific coastal town of Antofagasta and the Bolivian seat of government, La Paz .

In 1980, the Luksic family acquired the company and diversified the company, including making the move into mining . The mines in Chile include Los Pelambres, El Tesoro and Michilla.
