Archer is a city in Alachua County in the US state of Florida with 1118 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Archer is located about 15 km southwest of Gainesville and about 120 km southwest of Jacksonville .

history

Archer Town Hall

Originally called Deer Hammock in the 1840s and 1850s, and later Darden's Hammock . At that time the place was populated by the first fruit and vegetable farmers. The railway era in Archer began in 1861, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War . That year, the politician David Levy Yulee , who owned plantations in the area around Archer, as CEO of the Florida Railroad, had a railway line from Fernandina via Archer to Cedar Key completed. He had the place renamed after his recently deceased friend and Secretary of State , James T. Archer .

In 1893 a railway line was opened from High Springs via Archer to Tampa , which was part of the Plant System and is now operated by CSX . The section of the Florida Railroad between Archer and Cedar Key, now owned by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad , was shut down in 1932. From 1913 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad connected Archer with Morriston .

Archer was the home of musician Bo Diddley , who died here on June 2, 2008.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 1118 inhabitants were distributed over 517 households. The population density was 180.3 inh / km². 65.3% of the population identified themselves as whites , 30.9% as African American , 0.7% as Indians and 1.3% as Asian Americans . 0.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.3% to several ethnic groups. 4.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 24.3% of all households lived in 33.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 64.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.47 people and the average family size was 3.17 people.

28.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.9% ​​were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 45.9% of the population were male and 54.1% were female.

The median annual income was $ 34,722, with 25.0% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 97.54% of the population and 2.46% spoke Spanish .
