Arild Andersen (* 27. October 1945 in Lillestrøm ) is a Norwegian jazz - bassist and composer.
Live and act
Anderson studied bass with George Russell , with whom he also performed in the 1960s and 1970s, and with Karel Netolicka . In the 1960s he performed in Norway, and in 1968 at the Berlin Jazz Festival for the first time abroad. From 1967 to 1973 he was a member of the Jan Garbarek Quartet . He also worked with Phil Woods , Dexter Gordon , Hampton Hawes , Johnny Griffin , Sonny Rollins , Karin Krog , Sam Rivers , Paul Bley and Chick Corea .
Between 1972 and 1974 he stayed several times in New York City , where he performed with the Stan Getz Quartet , the Sam Rivers Trio , Sheila Jordan , Steve Kuhn , Joe Farrell , David Friedman , Barry Altschul and Paul Bley .
In 1974 he founded his own quartet, with whom he recorded four albums and toured Europe, and was active in another band with Radka Toneff . In 1980 he founded a band with Kenny Wheeler , Paul Motian and Steve Dobrogosz , and in 1981 another with Alphonse Mouzon , Bill Frisell and John Taylor , to which the guitarist John Abercrombie belonged at times . In 1982 The Arild Andersen Quintet followed with Jon Christensen , Jon Balke , Tore Brunborg and Nils Petter Molvær , from which the band Masqualero emerged . With this he toured the USA, Canada and Europe and won the Norwegian Grammy three times .
In 1988 he started working with folk singer Kirsten Bråten Berg to combine jazz with elements of Norwegian folk music. The outstanding result of this work was the Sagn plant , which also had great international success. In 1994 he composed the music for the stage version of the trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset .
In 1998 he formed the Jazz formation in the MAP trio with Markus Stockhausen and Patrice Héral , in which Terje Rypdal and Ferenc Snétberger were guests at times . In 2002 he composed three pieces for jazz trio and symphony orchestra, which were premiered by Jazz in Trio MAP and the Bergische Sinfoniker . Since 2002 he has also been working with the Danish pianist Carsten Dahl .
In 1969 he received the Buddy Prize .
