The topos of the submerged island of Atlantis described by Plato is one of the most frequently used subjects , themes and motifs in literature and film . The fascination that Atlantis exerted on those working in culture has contributed significantly to turning a narrative, originally intended by Plato as a political lesson, into a myth .

This article offers an overview of relevant artistic processing of the Atlantis material grouped by genre . The total number of books directly related to Plato's Atlantis is estimated to be 20,000.

The topic has been taken up in cinema and TV films. The first film adaptation dates from 1913.

music

The Latvian composer Jānis Ivanovs wrote his Symphony No. 4 in E flat minor in 1941 , which deals with Plato's version of the myth of Atlantis.

In 1963 the instrumental group " The Shadows " recorded the single "Atlantis".

There is also a song of the same name by Donovan from 1969 that tells the story of Atlantis. It was re-recorded in 2001 with the No Angels for the soundtrack of Atlantis - The Secret of the Lost City .

1974 published DDR - art rock band lift the title Atlantis, describing the destruction of the city.

The soul band Isley Brothers released the song Voyage to Atlantis on their album Go for Your Guns in 1977 .

Also in 1977, the German progressive rock  band Eloy released the concept album Ocean , the four tracks of which are themed around the creation and fall of the island of Atlantis and its inhabitants.

Atlantis Is Calling (SOS for Love) was the title of one of five singles by the duo Modern Talking ( Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders ), which reached number one in the German single charts in 1985/86 . The song held its own for four weeks (June 16 to July 7, 1986) at the top of the German charts. In Austria, the title reached second, in Switzerland third and in Great Britain at least 55th place in the singles charts. The song was also commercially successful in many other countries.

The Hungarian composer Péter Eötvös wrote a piece in 1995 with the title Atlantis for the WDR. It premiered in November 1995 in Cologne with the RSO Cologne under the direction of Péter Eötvös.

The concept album V - The New Mythology Suite by the progressive metal band Symphony X , released in 2000, is about the story of Atlantis.

The German power metal band Iron Savior tells an imaginative science fiction story in their concept albums, in which the downfall of Atlantis is one of the key points.

The Austrian duo Brunner & Brunner , active in the field of folk music, tried to score points with the title Atlantis , but did not have any particular success with it.

The German band Atrocity released the album Atlantis in 2004 , in which they dealt with topics related to the Atlantis myth.

The Spanish composer Manuel de Falla (1876–1946) wrote the scenic oratorio Atlantida during the last 20 years of his life . It was completed by Ernesto Halffter . The world premiere was in 1962. The composer was fascinated by the subject of Atlantis his whole life. The text is original in Basque.

  • Atlantis , a board game invented by Julian Courtland-Smith and published in1988 by Schmidt-Spiele and from 1997 by Parker .
  • In 1992, the LucasArts company developed the computer game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis on the theme of the fictional character of Indiana Jones .
  • In the Trials of Atlantis expansion pack for the Dark Age of Camelot computer game , the player can also visit the legendary location.
  • The French company Cryo Interactive Entertainment launched the 3D game Atlantis - The legendary adventure in 1997 .
  • In the first part of the console and computer game Tomb Raider , its main character Lara Croft has to collect parts of an old artifact. One of them is hidden in the tomb of Tihocan, who - as it turns out in the game - was one of the rulers of Atlantis.
  • Also the remake of Tomb Raider - feat. Lara Croft takes you back to Atlantis.
  • In the Age of Mythology campaign , the main character Arkantos comes from Atlantis. There you can also experience its downfall.

  • In the Japanese anime series Yu-Gi-Oh, Atlantis is named as the hometown of the main villain of season 4 and later also appears from the sea. Timaeus, Kritias and Hermos (a modified form of the name Hermocrates) are included as legendary knights and Oreichalkos is also mentioned, albeit as a stone.
  • For the computer building game Ruler of Olympus - Zeus , an expansion Ruler of Atlantis: Poseidon was offered, in which the city can be built using theoretical maps.
