The large hood (also called Motten hood or just hood ) at Motten , on the border of the Hessian district of Fulda and the Bavarian district of Bad Kissingen , is 658.1  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Rhön .

The Große Haube rises on the western edge of the Rhön on the border of the Bavarian Rhön in the east and the Hessian Rhön in the west and is part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve .

The border of Bavaria in the east and Hesse in the west runs over its summit. To the northeast is the core town of the Bavarian community of Motten , to the west is the Hessian village of Heubach , a south-eastern part of Kalbach .

To the northeast, the mountain is passed by an upper section of the Fliede tributary Döllau (Bavarian name of the Döllbach ), and to the southeast by one of the “Kleinen Sinn” (Bavarian name for the narrow sense ; tributary of the sense ). The Döllau tributary Schmidtwasser runs west of the mountain .

Its south-southwest branch is the Kleine Haube ( 592.5  m ; 1,075 m away) , which is also located on the Bavarian-Hessian border .

Natural allocation

The Große Haube belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Vorder- und Kuppenrhön (353) and in the subunit Kuppenrhön (353.2) to the natural area Brückenauer Kuppenrhön (353.20).

Protected areas

Parts of the Bavarian landscape protection area Bayerische Rhön ( CDDA no. 396113; 959.8  km² in size) and the Hessian LSG Frauenstein (CDDA no. 378454; designated 1968; 35.33 km²) lie on the Große Haube .

A few meters east of the summit of the wooded Großer Haube , i.e. on Bavarian soil, a 23.8 m high observation tower was rebuilt from 2004 to 2005 , which offers a comprehensive panorama: Milseburg , Wasserkuppe , Dammersfeldkuppe , Kreuzberg can be seen in an arc from northeast to south , Great and Small Auersberg and the Dreistelzberg . The Spessart expands in the southwest . When the weather is very clear you can see the Taunus in the west, the Vogelsberg in the northwest and the Knüllgebirge in the north .

Traffic and walking

The connection road Motten - Uttrichshausen ( Landesstraßen  2432–3430) runs north past the Große Haube , to the east the federal road  27 runs through Motten and Kothen , to the south - beyond the Kleine Haube  - a narrow road winds from Kothen to Heubach and westwards - beyond the federal motorway 7  - the L 2304 from Heubach to Uttrichshausen, so that you can bypass the mountain. The Haubentour , a 20 km long circular hiking trail around Heubach, which was created in connection with the Hochrhöner and corresponds to all quality criteria, leads over the summit . The Klosterweg (HWO6), a hiking trail run by the Rhön Club from Schlüchtern to Mellrichstadt, runs over the saddle between the Großer and Kleiner Haube .
