The club takes part in the game operations of the Lithuanian LKL and the ULEB Euroleague (2013/14 season). In addition, the handball club won the European Women's Cup in 66/67 and 67/68 .

history

Founded in 1944, Žalgiris Kaunas was five times Soviet champion in 1947, 1951 and three times in a row 1985-1987 (with Arvydas Sabonis as the star player and Valdemaras Chomičius , Rimas Kurtinaitis and Gintaras Krapikas ) and eleven times runner-up. After Lithuania's independence, Žalgiris Kaunas was able to win the Lithuanian championship title several times. After a decade of unbroken supremacy, Kaunas has had a prestigious exchange of blows with the capital city club Lietuvos Rytas from Vilnius every year since the end of the 90s .

After Žalgiris Kaunas was in the finals of European competitions in 1985 ( Cup Winners' Cup ) and 1986 ( European Champions Cup ) and only lost out against FC Barcelona and Cibona Zagreb with Dražen Petrović , they won the European Cup in 1999 . Since then, the team has been regularly represented in the Euroleague, but did not make it into the round of the last four.

Arvydas Sabonis is also the majority owner of the club today.

The game is played in the Žalgirio Arena (15,500 seats). Earlier halls were the S. Darius and S. Girėnas sports hall with a capacity of 4350 spectators and the Kaunas sports hall (4000 seats).
