The soundtrack for Baby Driver (2017) by director Edgar Wright was composed by the British film composer and Oscar winner Steven Price . The songs from the film were released as a soundtrack album on June 23, 2017 by Columbia Records and 30th Century Records on double CD , double vinyl and as a download .

production

The score for the "Car Chase Musical" Baby Driver was composed by Steven Price and is not part of the released soundtrack album. In addition, the viewer hears the songs that the protagonist Baby hears in the film. The thirty tracks from Baby Driver form the actual soundtrack for the film. Columbia Records (subsidiary of major label Sony Music Entertainment ) and Danger Mouse's label 30th Century Records released the soundtrack album on CD , vinyl and in digital form. The song selection spans genres such as pop , rock , soul , blues , funk , jazz , hip-hop and punk .

Carsten Baumgardt von Filmstarts explains that the obligatory background music does not sound in the background, as is usually the case in films, but is a permanent and penetrating part of the plot. The main character Baby himself sets the pace for the following scenes by selecting the songs, which range from the central piece Easy, from the Commodores to jazz and blues to Barry White, regardless of whether it is a rapid escape or a relaxed one Walk to get coffee. The opening song is the song Bellbottoms from The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion . The song Baby Driver by Simon & Garfunkel , which can be heard in the film , gave the protagonist his name. In the film, baby suffers from tinnitus and suppresses it almost continuously with songs that he puts together or mixes himself according to the daily routine. He follows conversations by reading others' lips.

Danger Mouse produced the song Chase Me especially for the film , which contains a sample of the song Bellbottoms by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and was created in collaboration with Run the Jewels and Big Boi . Killer Mike from Run the Jewels can also be seen in a small role in the film.

Normally, for the soundtrack of a film, directors choose pieces of music that are intended to accompany what is happening on the screen. In Baby Driver , however, Wright lets his titular hero hear music that seems to decide his fate, according to Variety's Peter Debruge . IndieWire's Eric Kohn also says that while Wright himself described Baby Driver as a car film that is powered by music, it has become more of a music film made around cars. The music that is played incessantly in the film includes songs by Lionel Richie , Isaac Hayes and Queen , who help shape the story of the film, and is the best soundtrack to a film of the year for Kohn.

Daniel Hecht from tonight.de also says: "You probably won't find a better compilation of cool and timeless oldies this year!"

Rolling Stone's Peter Travers also calls it the best soundtrack of the year. In the film, Wright gives every scene its indelible mark, says Travers.

Chart successes

The soundtrack debuted at number 18 on the album download chart on June 30, 2017 and at number 4 on the soundtrack album chart in the United Kingdom , where it peaked at number 1 the following week. At this point it also rose to number 10 in the US soundtrack album charts and at number 141 on the Billboard 200 . The following week it reached number 27 on the Billboard 200.
