The Chiasso – Milan railway line is a cross-border, continuously double-track main railway line electrified with 3000 volts direct current between Chiasso ( Switzerland ) and Milan . The route is owned by the FS infrastructure subsidiary RFI .

meaning

The track is next to the axis Novara - Bellinzona (with the railway lines Novara-Luino and Luino-Bellinzona ) one of the two Südzufahrten Italy to Gotthardbahn and Gotthardtunnel . While the route via Luino is of great importance in freight traffic, the Chiasso – Milan line, in addition to the rest of the freight traffic, provides all of the international long-distance passenger transport between Switzerland and Italy, which is handled via the Gotthard.

history

The Milan – Monza section was opened on August 18, 1840 by the Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto as the second railway line in Italy behind the Napoli – Portici line. Originally the line was to be extended to Bergamo , but when it became clear that a separate license would be necessary for a branch line to Chiasso, the project was abandoned in favor of the extension to Chiasso. On October 10, 1849, the continuation to Camnago - Lentate was opened and on December 6 of the same year the tracks reached the station of Albate - Camerlata . It was completed up to Como in 1875. At the same time as the Gotthard tunnel and the opening of the Ticino valley railway to Chiasso, the gap with the Monte Olimpino tunnel (now Monte Olimpino 1 tunnel ) was completed in 1882 .

In 1898 a trial operation between Milan and Monza with the RM 5101 and 5102 accumulator railcars was set up. This is considered to be the first electric railway company in Italy . However, it was stopped again in 1904.

On July 20, 1941, a serious railway accident occurred in Como station : A passenger train , which was supposed to bring Italian workers to Germany, was hit by parts of the load from a passing freight train . 30 people died.

The Monte Olimpino 2 tunnel went into operation on June 18, 1990 . This tunnel extends over a length of 7209 meters and is located between the border and the Cucciago stop . It was built as a freight bypass for Comos and also serves as such. Over 18,000 freight trains pass through the tunnel every year. In November 2009 it was rehabilitated for ten months after water was able to penetrate through various leaks in the tunnel roof.

The line belonging to ERTMS Corridor A is to be the first Italian line to be completely equipped with ETCS Level 2 . The contract announced in January 2016 runs for two and a half years and has a volume of 31 million euros. The line will also have an electronic signal box .

passenger traffic

Long-distance transport

The Gotthard axis is next to the Lötschberg- Simplon axis , the second north-south passenger connection between Switzerland and Italy. At the moment, ETR 470 compositions run every two hours as EuroCity between Zurich and Milan. They stop in Chiasso and Como San Giovanni and go to Milano Centrale train station in Milan . From the 2010 timetable change, when the ETR 610 is also to be used on the Gotthard axis, a daily pair of trains from Basel SBB via Lucerne will be added (see EuroCity-Express ). In the past, when the cross-border traffic Basel / Zurich-Gotthard-Italy was still classified in the Intercity category, the train stations of Seregno and Monza also belonged to regular stops.

Regional traffic

The route is an integral part of the Milan S-Bahn . The S11 operated by Trenord (formerly Trenitalia , from 2004 to 2008 TILO ) runs between Chiasso and Milano Porta Garibaldi . In addition, the Camnago- Lentate station is the starting point for the S4 line (formerly from LeNord ) to Milano Cadorna ; however, this line leaves the Chiasso – Milan line immediately after the station on a connection to the FNM Milan – Asso line . From Seregno , the S9 runs to Milano Greco Pirelli , and then takes the Milan bypass via Milano Lambrate to Milano San Cristoforo station .

Freight transport

Since the opening of the transport market on the Gotthard, trains from the companies DB Schenker / NordCargo , BLS Cargo , TX Logistik and Hupac have been running in addition to the SBB freight transport subsidiary SBB Cargo and Trenitalia .
