The Siemens Desiro HC (HC for High Capacity ) is an electric, single- and double-decker multiple unit (DTZ) from the manufacturer Siemens Mobility from the Siemens Desiro product family .
The Desiro HC multiple units are listed in the German Vehicle Settings Register as series 0462 and 1462 .
Multiple unit
The Desiro HC was presented at Innotrans 2014. The multiple unit has both one-story and two-story cars and is intended to combine the advantages of both concepts with more space. The middle part of the powered one-story end car and the lower deck of the powered two-story intermediate car can be reached from the platform without steps or ramps. A four-part train with two double-decker cars is 105 meters long and offers 400–420 seats, depending on the version, while a five-part train with three double-decker cars is 131 meters long and offers space for 560 passengers.
The vehicles are made of lightweight aluminum, they meet the required collision capability. Air-sprung bogies of the types SF 100 and SF 500 are used. The multiple units have an electrodynamic brake with energy recovery.
Depending on the variant and platform height, entry into the end and / or intermediate cars is barrier-free. The placement of the barrier-free toilet and the wheelchair ramp also depends on the variant.
The Siemens locations in Krefeld (single-story end wagons, double-decker intermediate wagons since early 2019), Wien Simmering (double-decker intermediate wagons until early 2019), Graz (bogies) and Wegberg-Wildenrath (assembly of the individual wagons and commissioning) are involved in the production of this type of train. involved.

Rhine-Ruhr Express
Four-part Desiro HC have been used for the preliminary operation of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express since December 2018. For this purpose, 82 vehicles were ordered from Siemens in March 2015, which will be leased to the train operators. The order, which also includes the maintenance of the trains over a period of 32 years, has a volume of 1.7 billion euros. Since final acceptance on time was not possible due to defects, Siemens and the participating authorities have agreed on the free delivery of two additional vehicles. The first four-part multiple unit of a total of 84 trains was presented on July 12, 2017. It bears the series designation 462. With it, the test drives in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center began . Test drives have also been carried out in the DB network since December 2017.
The trains are equipped with WiFi, sockets, reading lights, folding tables and an infotainment system. In one end car there is the 1st class area and a multi-purpose area 2nd class, in the second end car there is a multi-purpose area with a universal toilet suitable for the disabled .
Siemens has built a maintenance facility in Dortmund-Eving for maintenance. Since December 9, 2018, 15 trains have been running in advance on line RE 11 between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Düsseldorf . The operator is the railway company Abellio Rail NRW . A further twelve trains have been in operation by National Express on the RE 5 line between Wesel and Koblenz since June 2019 . With the timetable change in December 2019, National Express also started operating the RE 6 between Cologne / Bonn Airport and Minden . In 2020, two more Regional Express lines will follow with preliminary operations by the two companies Abellio and National Express.
Rhine Valley network
In February 2017, DB Regio ordered 15 four-part Desiro HCs along with a further 24 Mireo copies. The Desiro HC of the 1462 series has been used as a regional express on the Rhine Valley route since June 14, 2020 . The line runs every hour between Basel , Freiburg and Offenburg . So far, the line has only been tied through to Karlsruhe during rush hour ; after the Rastatt tunnel has been completed , all regional express trains are to run to Karlsruhe. The trains are painted yellow-white-black in the Baden-Württemberg state design.
Augsburg networks
For the Augsburger networks (Lot 1) has Go Ahead Germany 12 five-Siemens Desiro HC and 44 three-piece Siemens Mireo ordered that should be used from December 2022nd Both vehicle types can be flexibly coupled to one another in order to be able to optimally adapt to demand.
Elbe-Spree network
The Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH (ODEG) ordered 21 six-car and two four-car Desiro HC trains as part of the re-allocation of the Elbe-Spree network. In the new transport contract, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) has an option to convert 13 six-car vehicles into 26 four-car vehicles and let these vehicles run in double traction on the RE 1 train routes between Brandenburg and Frankfurt (Oder). In these trains, there are 800 seats instead of 600 seats per train. When deciding to convert, the six-part units are separated in the middle and an end car is added to each. The option must be ordered by December 2022 at the latest.
Network Franconia-South Thuringia
In April 2020, the Bavarian Railway Company announced the award of the "Franconia-South Thuringia" network to DB Regio Bayern, with traffic starting in December 2023. For traffic on the new VDE 8 line , a top speed of 190 km / h, ETCS equipment, pressure upgrade and at least 600 seats in 2nd class with 8 six-part Siemens Desiro HCs are guaranteed. For the remaining lines, 18 four-car vehicles with a top speed of 160 km / h and around 360 seats in 2nd class are available, with these trains generally running as a double unit on the Nuremberg – Bamberg section to ensure high capacities.
Israel
After tendering 60 double-decker multiple units for use on the first electrically operated route in Israel, between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem , Israel Railways decided in September 2017 for the Desiro HC. The delivery comprises 330 cars that are to run in units of four- and six-car trains. The end cars will be single-story and powered, while the intermediate cars will be double-decked and without a drive. Siemens will also set up a depot in Ashkelon , where at least 24 of the 60 multiple units will be waiting. When the contract between the manufacturer and Israel Railways was signed in March 2018, it was announced that 24 units (six four-part, 18 six-part) of the 60 potential Desiros HC will be called up for the time being. If all trains are ordered, the contract is valued at $ 975.3 million ($ 910 million for the trains and $ 65.3 million for the 15-year maintenance of 24 multiple units).
