Bhagalpur is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2569 km². The administrative seat is the city of Bhagalpur .

The population is 3,037,766 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 25.36% and was therefore very high. Bhagalpur has a gender ratio of 880 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 63.14% in 2011, an increase of almost 14 percentage points compared to 2001. However, reading skills are still well below the national average. Almost 82% of the population are Hindus and around 18% are Muslims .
