The Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal ( lat. : Dioecesis Cancunensis-Chetumaliensis , span. : Diócesis de Cancún-Chetumal ) is in Mexico located Roman Catholic diocese based in Chetumal . It includes the Mexican state of Quintana Roo .
structure
The diocese is divided into the following six deaneries (each with parishes):
- Deanery 1 San Pablo : Parishes of Lázaro Cárdenas (seat of Kantunilkín) and Isla Mujeres
- Deanery 2 San Juan María Vianney : Municipalities of José María Morelos and Puerto Morelos
- Deanery 3 San Miguel Arcángel : Municipio Cozumel , Cozumel Island
- Deanery 4 Nuestra Señora del Carmen : Municipio de Solidaridad (seat Playa del Carmen )
- Deanery 5 Santa Cruz : Felipe Carrillo Puerto (seat of Felipe Carrillo Puerto ) and José María Morelos
- Deanery 6 Sagrado Corazón de Jesús : Othón P. Blanco (seat Chetumal ) and Bacalar (seat Bacalar )
history
The Territorial Prelature Cancun-Chetumal was on May 23, 1970 by Pope Paul VI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Qui ad Beati Pauli from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Yucatán as the territorial prelature of Chetumal . The territorial prelature was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Yucatán as a suffragan . On 20 December 1996, the territorial prelate was Chetumal by the Congregation for Bishops with the decree Nupera urbs in territorial prelate Cancún-Chetumal renamed.
Pope Francis elevated the territorial prelature to the rank of diocese on February 15, 2020 and appointed the previous prelate Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas LC as the first diocesan bishop .
