The Brawn GP F1 Team is a former British Formula 1 racing team. He emerged from the Honda Racing F1 Team on March 3, 2009 and took part in the Formula 1 World Championship in 2009 . The team surprisingly won the drivers 'and constructors' championships straight away. After the successful debut season, Brawn GP was again majority taken over by Daimler AG and entered 2010 under the name " Mercedes GP " .

After the Honda Racing F1 Team resigned on December 5, 2008, Brawn GP took over the racing team on March 3, 2009 through a management buy-out from former Honda team boss Ross Brawn . Despite a grant of 130 million euros from Honda, the team had to be reduced to 450 employees. Ex-Honda drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello were confirmed as drivers for the 2009 season . The team also hired a former Honda employee, Anthony Davidson, as a replacement driver . Ex-Honda replacement pilot Alexander Wurz also remained loyal to the team and worked as a technical advisor for the new team.
Brawn was initially without sponsors because its predecessor Honda had almost all sponsorship contracts expired because of its Earthdream campaign. Before the first race in 2009, however, the team presented Richard Branson's Virgin Group as a sponsor.
In 2009, Brawn GP used the BGP 001 chassis together with the Mercedes FO108W 2.4 V8 engine.
At the start of the season at the Australian Grand Prix , the team had an unexpected success that was celebrated as a sensation in the trade press despite some best times in the winter test drives before the season: Button qualified for pole position when the team was first out and Barrichello completed the front row . In the race, Brawn celebrated a double victory in the same order. For the first time since Wolf in 1977 , a new team achieved a triumph at the Grand Prix of Argentina on their first appearance; a double victory of a new team in the first race there was the last time in 1954 : At the time, won the Mercedes-Benz pilots Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling in the French Grand Prix .
However, from the point of view of some competing teams, a special double diffuser with a central channel, which Williams and Toyota also used in addition to Brawn, played a decisive role in the victory in Australia . The teams BMW-Sauber , Ferrari , Red Bull and Renault had already officially protested during the race weekend. After the on-site race stewards rejected this, the above-mentioned racing teams filed a lawsuit with the FIA appeals court , which was not upheld on April 14th.
Jenson Button also posted pole position and victory for Brawn at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang . However, as the race was stopped prematurely due to heavy rain, only half points were awarded. At the following race in China , the series of successes broke off: In the pouring rain, the Red Bull Racing team clinched a one-two victory, with Button and Barrichello behind them in third and fourth. In Bahrain , too , Red Bull initially seemed to be the favorite and the Toyota works team also triumphed with best times in qualifying. In addition, Brawn had to struggle with cooling problems on his Mercedes units and feared premature failures due to overheating. In the race, however, Jenson Button was not deterred and secured his third win of the season.
The European opener in Spain on the Circuit de Catalunya initially again identified the Red Bull team as favorites, as their car was certified as having the most efficient aerodynamics. Shortly before the end of the qualification, a Red Bull was actually at the top of the timesheet, before Jenson Button literally set the fastest time with a “chaos lap” at the last second. An undisputed double win out in the race went Brawn, which, however, the Red Bull drivers through the pitch Sebastian Vettel was encouraged that during the entire race distance behind the Ferrari of Felipe Massa was stuck and could not unfold so its possible race pace. It seemed until halfway through the race that Barrichello was going to win for Brawn for the first time before a change of strategy put Button back on the road to victory.
At the traditional Grand Prix in the streets of Monaco , the team turned the excellent mechanics of their car into superiority for the first time, so that Button and Barrichello were once again on the top podium. The Grand Prix of Turkey won again button. Barrichello, who got off to a bad start, fell far behind and caused a spin and an accident while catching up, ended up having to give up the race prematurely due to a gearbox failure.
In the remaining ten races of the season, Button was only able to finish on the podium at the Italian and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Barrichello, however, still won the European and Italian Grand Prix.
Thanks to Button's fifth place at the Brazilian Grand Prix and Barrichello's eighth place, Brawn GP was able to win the Constructors' Championship one race before the end of the season. In the same race, Jenson Button prematurely won the drivers' world championship.
After the end of the season it was announced that Brawn GP would sell 75.1 percent of its shares in Mercedes-Benz . The German automobile manufacturer thus acquired the majority of the British team and took part in the Formula 1 World Championship in 2010 under its own name ( “ Mercedes Grand Prix ” ). The name "Brawn GP" disappeared from Formula 1 after only one year.
