The castle Gruningen , including Castle Grüningen mentioned, which is ruin a moated castle in the western part of the district Grüningen the city Pohlheim in the Gießen district in Hesse .
history
The castle complex was probably built as a moated castle in the 12th to 13th centuries. It is not certain whether the “Schloss Gruningen” documented in 1394 is identical to the Grüninger Castle. Around 1400, Philip VII of Falkenstein-Münzenberg issued a letter of freedom and mentioned "Grüninges Castle" in it.
The castle had a square floor plan and later belonged to Count Gottfried VIII von Eppstein , who had it rebuilt in the first half of the 15th century to replace an older complex. The first secure mention is made in 1459, when Werner von Eppenstein is said to have sold half of the castle and Grüningen to Count Bernhard von Solms - Braunfels . Another indirect mention was made in 1503 by Eberhard IV von Eppstein, who promised a truce at Grüningen.
The castle fell into disrepair before the Thirty Years War . Traces of fire are not proven. In an account from 1603 it says: “Likewise, divide the ruined Burgk into one another with Irem Bezirgk”. In 1679, Wilhelm Moritz Graf zu Solms-Greifenstein (1651–1724) renewed the letter of freedom for his castle men and citizens in Grüningen.
investment
The square moated castle with a side length of about 28 meters was integrated into the city wall , which followed an even older village fortification. The stump of a round tower with a diameter of around 9.5 meters and a wall thickness of around 0.80 meters can still be seen at the northwest corner. Restored, it is now used as a viewing platform.
A house group having wiederaufgebautem timbered floor, probably the former Palas is reconsidered and restored. It goes up on the southern corner directly in the defensive wall and has two vaulted cellars. The basement foundations of another house are visible to the north, and the remains of a well in the northeast. The surrounding defensive wall of the castle has a continuous thickness of two meters.
Todays use
On June 3, 1983, the restoration of the ruins by Heimatverein Grüningen eV began. Over 25 years of work, the then dilapidated castle was restored, which was honored with the Hessian honorary award on November 1, 2008. The castle is used today for castle festivals and other events and has blossomed into the town's gem.
