The CW Television Network , more commonly called The CW called, is an American TV - Network , which started began broadcasting on 18 September, 2006.
The network emerged from the merger of the two networks United Paramount Network (UPN) and The WB Television Network (The WB), with some broadcasts being taken over. As part of the merger in September 2006, the two networks ceased their independent operations. The CW, which targets the 18- to 34-year-olds audience, is a joint venture between CBS Corporation , owner of UPN, and Warner Bros. Entertainment , majority owner of The WB. The name "CW" is composed of the initials of the two companies together ( C BS and W arner Bros.).

UPN and The WB both began broadcasting in January 1995. At that time, FOX first managed to gain a significant market share in the US television landscape. Despite some high-rated series, the networks failed to match FOX's success in their eleven-year history or even to compete with the “Big Three” ( ABC , CBS and NBC ) who dominate the US television market. UPN increasingly focused on comedy series, specifically aimed at the African American population of the United States. In contrast, The WB tried drama series that were intended to appeal to the target group of 18 to 34 year olds. While UPN only had a small market share for years, The WB was able to steadily expand its market share. Since 2003, however, The WB was no longer able to start new and successful series, which quickly led to its market share dropping. As a result of the relatively low audience figures, both networks made a total loss of almost 2 billion US dollars, so that the operators of UPN and The WB announced the merger of the networks to form The CW on January 23, 2006.
The CW, like its predecessors UPN and The WB, focuses on the target group of 18 to 34 year olds. The operators CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment hope that the combination of the best programming and the strongest television stations will mean that The CW will eventually catch up with the major networks ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX. In contrast to the major networks, The CW currently has no plans to broadcast national news and sports formats.
The WB closed on September 17, 2006 with a broadcast of the pilots of its most successful series ( Felicity , Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Angel and Dawson's Creek ).
UPN's last broadcast on September 15, 2006 was the usual broadcast of WWE Friday Night SmackDown . The unspectacular end of the network was not surprising, as UPN could no longer be received in many areas of the USA. This was due to the fact that since September 5, 2006, many former UPN stations have been broadcasting the MyNetworkTV program . MyNetworkTV was founded by FOX in response to the merger of UPN and The WB to form The CW.
Range
The CW can be received throughout the United States as well as Canada , Mexico, and Puerto Rico . The network has 174 affiliated television stations which together cover 95.3% of the United States and over 105 million television households. The Tribune Company (former shareholder The WB) provides 16 stations and the CBS Television Stations Group controls a further 11 stations. Together, these 27 stations reach 48% of the United States, all other areas are reached by television stations that are neither owned by Tribune nor CBS.
Not all former UPN and The WB stations also broadcast The CW's programming. The “strongest” station was selected in each television market, and in rare cases a completely different one. The remaining stations have either become independent or are now broadcasting programs from MyNetworkTV. FOX owns various former UPN stations and, following the announcement of the merger plans of UPN and The WB, faced the problem that its own stations would soon no longer broadcast primetime programs. Therefore FOX founded a new network (MyNetworkTV), which is now broadcast by many former UPN and The-WB stations.
In contrast to UPN and The WB, The CW had a very large reach from the start. Even after their eleven years of broadcasting, the two predecessor networks only reached 85% of the USA - The CW itself and the new competing network MyNetworkTV have a reach of over 95%.
Program schedule
The CW adopted The WB's 30 hour weekly schedule. The network broadcasts 13 hours in prime time - Monday to Friday from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In addition, the program will be broadcast on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (repetition block) and on weekdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (repetition block with series that do not run on The CW). In addition, the network broadcasts a five-hour block of animated films (Kids' WB on The CW) every Saturday morning.
On May 18, 2006, The CW announced its first prime time programming schedule for the 2006/2007 television season beginning in September. Due to the merging of two network program plans, there were numerous cancellations. At UPN, only African American comedy series ( Half And Half , One On One , Love , Inc. and Eve ) fell victim to the merger. At The WB, in addition to some comedy series ( Twins , Related , and Hello Holly ), the WB series, Everwood, which was most acclaimed next to Gilmore Girls , also hit . The CW and the producers of Charmed had agreed to discontinue the series in the course of the merger before the program schedule was announced.
The CW surprisingly extended the critically acclaimed but poorly rated series Veronica Mars and the also poorly rated One Tree Hill . The mystery series Supernatural , which has been broadcast on The WB since 2005 , has been continued on The CW since 2006.
Two new series were produced for the 2008/2009 programming season, including 90210 , a spin-off to Beverly Hills, 90210 and other documentary soaps. In 2009, the station began broadcasting the mystery series Vampire Diaries , the short-lived youth series The Beautiful Life and the remake Melrose Place .
In 2010, Nikita started the reboot of the action series broadcast from 1997 to 2001. The series The Secret Circle , which is based on the novel by LJ Smith , who also provided the template for the series Vampire Diaries , Hart of Dixie and Ringer were ordered for autumn 2011 . For the 2012-2013 season, The CW has ordered an excessively large number for the station with a total of five new series, including Arrow , Beauty and the Beast , The Carrie Diaries , Cult and Emily Owens . As the first series for the 2013-2014 season, the Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals received the green light, followed by The Tomorrow People , The 100 , Reign and Star-Crossed .
