Carl Hesse (organ builder)
Johann Carl August Hesse (born August 6, 1808 in Paplitz , Kingdom of Prussia , † July 18, 1882 in Pest , Austria-Hungary ) was a German organ builder in Trieste and Vienna . He is considered one of the most important and productive organ builders in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the 19th century.
Life
Carl Hesse was born as the son of the carpenter Johann Friedrich Hesse and Koch, born by Johanna Regina, in Paplitz, Brandenburg. It is unknown whether he began an apprenticeship as an organ builder there, but his work later showed influences from German organ building.
Around 1833 he came to Trieste , where he took over the workshop of Pietro Antonio Bossi . Carl Hesse studied Italian organ building and was significantly influenced by it throughout his life. In the following years he built some new plants in the Adriatic region, today's Slovenia and Croatia. In 1848 he built an organ in Gumpendorf , at that time still near Vienna, and settled there at Millergasse 19. The place was incorporated into Vienna in 1850. From there he built numerous organs, especially in the various countries of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, but also some in the Russian and Ottoman empires.
In 1880 he moved to his son Franz in Pest (today in Budapest), where he died in 1882 after doing a lot and was buried in the local evangelical cemetery.
marriage and family
Carl Hesse was married to Maria Barbara Josefa Witek. The son Carl Hesse jun. (Hungarian Károly Hesse , 1854–1935) first founded a harmonium factory in Vienna and moved to Ödenburg (Sopron) around 1900 , where he built harmoniums and repaired organs. The son Johann Baptist Hesse worked as an instrument maker in Vienna, the son Franz Hesse (Ferenc Hesse) was a piano tuner and repairer in Pest .
