The main characters of the work are an anthropomorphic red and a white blood cell .

A 13-part anime series produced by David Production ran in Japan from July to September 2018 . Both appear under the title Cells at Work! also in German-speaking countries.

action

The storyline of the manga series and its animation adaptation takes place in the human body , in which 37.2 trillion anthropomorphic cells work to keep the body healthy . The series focuses on two cells: erythrocytes (red blood cells) in training AE3803 that constantly runs at work in the body, and leukocytes (white blood cells) U-1146 , which is constantly in the fight against foreign bodies is that try to attack the body.

Characters

Erythrocyte (red blood cell) ( 赤血 球 , Sekkekkyū ) (AE3803)
AE3803 is a dispersed red blood cell in training whose job it is to deliver oxygen , carbon dioxide and nutrients throughout the body. Red blood cells are shown as suppliers in red uniform. She meets the leukocyte U-1146 when it rescues her from a pneumococcal attack. She is clumsy and gets lost a lot, and she is unlucky to run into bacteria and other pathogens all the time, but is determined to do her job as best she can.
Neutrophil ( 好 中 球 , Kōchūkyū ) /White blood cells ( 白血球 , Hakkekkyū ) (U-1146)
U-1146 is a white blood cell whose job it is to fight foreign germs, bacteria and viruses . Despite this activity, he is rather quiet and gentle.
Macrophage ( マ ク ロ フ ァ ー ジ , Makurofāji ) /Monocyte ( 単 球 , tankyū )
Macrophages are white blood cells that take care of eliminating microorganisms. They are portrayed as maids armed with heavy, blunt objects. The macrophages are on the antigen involved operating decisions and provide immune information. In addition, they take care of the education of the erythroblasts and their formation to erythrocytes.
If a macrophage is in the bloodstream, it acts as a monocytin and wears a chemical protective suit .
T killer cell ( キ ラ ー T 細胞 , Kirā Tī Saibō )
The T killer cell is a white blood cell that fights any foreign body . He is loud and easily irritable and looks down on conspecifics who make friends with other cells - such as U-1146 and AE3803. He has a rivalry with the T helper cell . In his youth he was considered weak compared to the other T killer cells and was only able to survive the training thanks to the help of a T helper cell.
Thrombocytes (platelets) ( 血小板 , Kesshōban )
The platelets are responsible for healing the body when it is injured. In keeping with their small cell size, they are shown as preschoolers.
T helper cell ( ヘ ル パ ー T 細胞 , Herupā Tī Saibō )
The T helper cell determines the strategy and the course in dealing with hostile foreign bodies. He's the commander of the T killer cells. Because of their shared past, he has a rivalry with a T killer cell.
Eosinophils ( 好 酸 球 , Kōsankyū )
Eosinophil is a white blood cell known to be U-1146 since it was raised in the same bone marrow . It feels inferior in comparison to other immune cells due to its weakness against bacteria . However, it is able to fight against parasites such as the roundworm .
Older red blood cell ( 先輩 赤血 球 , Senpai Sekkekkyū ) (AA5100)
AA5100 is an older red blood cell ( Senpai ), which AE3803 occasionally guides and helps.
Younger red blood cell ( 球球 赤血 , Kohai Sekkekkyū? ) (NT4201)
A young but very serious red blood cell ( Kohai ) becoming an AE3803 student.
Dendritic cell ( 樹状 細胞 , Jujō Saibō )
The dendritic cell is represented as a call center employee. It can stimulate the naive T cells and convert them into effectors.
B cell ( B 細胞 , Bī Saibō )
The B-cell is a white blood cell that carries a weapon that fires antibodies . He is often annoyed that he gets less praise than the other killer cells.
Basophil ( 好 塩 基 球 , Kōenkikyū )
Since the specific role of the basophils in the immune defense is unclear, he is portrayed as a mysterious figure who always utters cryptic expressions. It usually appears in parasitic infections.

publication

The first chapter of Akane Shimizu's manga was published on January 26, 2015 (issue 3/2015) in the magazine Gekkan Shōnen Sirius of the Kōdansha publishing house . The chapters have so far (as of August 2018 ) been summarized in five anthologies ( Tankōbon ). Kodansha USA , an offshoot of the Japanese publisher, distributes the manga as Cells at Work! in the United States . In Taiwan accepts Tong Li Publishing the publication of the work. In German-speaking countries, the work has been published since April 10, 2019 by the Imprint Manga Cult of the Cross Cult publishing house ; three volumes have been published so far.

The first offshoot of the manga was found on April 3, 2017 in the magazine Nakayoshi (issue 5/2017) under the title Hataraku Saikin ( は た ら く 細菌 , dt. "Bacteria at work") written and drawn by Haruyuki Yoshida . This deals with the work of the intestinal bacteria . The second offshoot Hatarakanai Saibō ( は た ら か な い 細胞 , "cells that don't work") was implemented by Moe Sugimoto and has been published since July 26, 2017 (edition 9/2017) like the main work in the Gekkan Shōnen Sirius. Here erythroblasts are in the foreground.

A third offshoot, Hataraku Saibō Black ( は た ら く 細胞 BLACK), has been running in Morning magazine since June 7, 2018 (issue 27/2018) . This is written by Shigemitsu Harada with drawings by Issei Hatsuyoshi under the direction of Akane Shimizu. In contrast to Hataraku Saibō , this one has a much more pessimistic tone of voice, as the body is badly damaged by heavy nicotine and alcohol consumption, as well as other vices. Nevertheless, the cells work tirelessly (but stressed) to keep it running, even though more and more parts are slowly failing. Manga Cult has been publishing the work in German-speaking countries since April 2019. The offshoot Cells at Work has also been appearing since November 2019 ! Black .

Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network praised the instructive aspect of the manga, despite the repetition of the information delivery, and named Cells at Work! entertaining thanks to his likeable characters. Sean Gaffney described the series as a very funny shōnen action manga. He particularly emphasized their silliness.

The ranking book Kono Manga ga Sugoi! picked Cells at Work at number seven in the top manga for male readers. Paul Gravett added the work to his personal list of the Top 22 Comics, Graphic Novels & Manga in October 2016.

By July 2017, the manga had sold around 1.3 million times; in January 2018 there were 1.5 million copies sold.

The platelets , which are portrayed as preschool children, quickly became an internet phenomenon in the anime scene, which also resulted in numerous memes.

The neuro- oncologist Satoru Osuka praised the "interesting and precise way" of depicting the cells of the body, especially episode 7 in the anime, which deals with the topic of cancer cells.
