Cobenzl (noble family)
The Cobenzl (also Kobenzl, Cubencel, Cubencl, Cobentsl, etc. Cobenzl, Czech : Kobenzlové ) were a uradeliges Carinthian family which then in Krain and Gorizia , and finally in Bohemia was established. In 1588 it was raised to the imperial baron status as "Freiherrn zu Lueg, Mossau and Leittenburg" and in 1674 to the hereditary-Austrian and in 1704 and 1722 to the imperial count . The male line of the family died out in 1810 .
history
In 1209 an Ulrich Cubencel was named as a witness in a traditional note from the Benedictine monastery of St. Paul in Lavanttal . Johann Cubentcel appears in 1272 as an arbitrator in a dispute between the St. Paul monastery and the von Scheldenhofen monastery . In 1362 Frizelinus Cobentsl received various fiefs from Friedrich III. Count of Ortenburg , governor of Carinthia. The lineage begins with the knight Ulrich I. Cobenzl around 1516. The rise of this family began with Johann Cobenzl , who first worked in the office of the Bishop of Laibach and then rose higher and higher. After completing his studies in Vienna and Bologna, he became head of the Austrian chancellery in the Imperial Chancellery in 1558 . He was then ambassador, minister at the Reichstag, governor of Carniola and, as a representative of the Habsburgs, held high offices in the Teutonic Order , most recently as coadjutor of the Austrian ballot . Ferdinand I confirmed to him and his brother Ulrich (I) the imperial nobility in 1563, and on July 16, 1564 the brothers were accepted as barons of Prossegg zu Lueg, Leÿtenburg and Mossau in the gentry. They received the Prossegg fortress for themselves and their descendants from the emperor as a fief. Johann Kobenzl von Prossegg was elevated to the status of imperial baron by Rudolf II as baron of Lueg, Mossau and Leittenburg on August 30, 1588 in Prague .
