Crestview is a city and also the county seat of Okaloosa County in the US state of Florida with 20,978 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Crestview is located approximately 70 km northeast of Pensacola and is the largest city in the Fort Walton Beach metropolitan area .

history

The railway age at what will later be Crestview's location began in 1883 with the opening of the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad . They created a continuous rail link between Pensacola and Jacksonville . In 1894, the Yellow River Railroad (which became part of the L&N in 1906 ) opened another route from here to Florala , Alabama .

The City of Crestview was officially established in 1916. The name of the city is made up of the terms "crest" (= comb summit) and "view" (= Look) together and was elected as the city on the southern branch to a wooded ridge between the rivers Shoal River and Yellow River is . After Okaloosa County was founded in 1915, the city was elevated to its county seat two years later . At around 235 feet (72 meters) above sea level, Crestview is one of the highest locations in Florida.

Until 2005, the Crestview station was a station of the Sunset Limited of the Amtrak railway company from Orlando to Los Angeles . However, after the effects of Hurricane Katrina , the line was shortened to the New Orleans - Los Angeles route. Since then, the only rail transport has consisted of goods transports, which are carried out by the railway company CSX Transportation .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 20,978 inhabitants were distributed over 9,153 households. The population density was 633.8 inh / km 2 . 71.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 18.6% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 3.1% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 4.4% to several ethnic groups. 6.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 17.2% of all households lived in 41.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 71.1% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.12.

30.7% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 31.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 13.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 32 years. 48.9% of the population were male and 51.1% were female.

The median annual income was $ 48,750, with 19.4% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 93.70% of the population, 2.98% spoke Spanish and 3.32% spoke another language.

The Crestview Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Crestview is crossed by Interstate 10 , US Highway 90 ( SR 10 ), and Florida State Road 85 . The nearest airport is Pensacola International Airport (around 70 km away).

The Crestview station is decommissioned.

The crime rate in 2010 was 284 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one murder, eight rapes, 16 robberies, 62 assaults, 155 break-ins, 460 thefts, 29 car thefts and three arson attacks.
