The GDR ice hockey championship in 1984/85 saw SC Dynamo Berlin as the winner for the ninth time in the past ten events . Even the first double victory for the Weißwasseraner in five years did not change the fact that the Berlin team had already won the title three game days before the end of the league series. In view of the allegedly prevailing advantage of the capitals for years, this time in the second game in Lusatia a controversial referee decision led to massive spectator riots. The game was canceled and counted as a victory for the guests from Berlin.

The BSG Monsator Berlin could also refer to nine titles . Due to a point loss against Motor Bad Muskau , the team traditionally consisting of former GDR national players had to win the direct duel against long-term rivals and hosts, Einheit Crimmitschau .
