The GDR boxing championships were held for the 39th time in 1987 and took place from December 2nd to 6th in the Cottbus town hall. 91 boxers took part in the title fights and determined the champions in twelve weight classes. Only three boxers started in the flyweight division, which is why there was only one third place. Boxing also took place in Hoyerswerda (preliminary round), Weißwasser and Lübbenau (intermediate round ) and Senftenberg (semi-finals). The SC Traktor Schwerin was with five titles the most successful club this championship. With René Breitbarth , Henry Maske and Ulli Kaden three boxers defended their title from the previous year. Andreas Zülow and René Suetovius came one weight class higher this time to title honors. The super heavyweight Ulli Kaden was honored as the best boxer and the 17-year-old featherweight Marco Rudolph received the journalism award .
