David Vanterpool (born March 31, 1973 in Daytona Beach , Florida ) is an American basketball coach and former player. Vanterpool's family comes from the US Virgin Islands , so Vanterpool played as a national player in international games for this outer area of the United States . After studying in the "motherland" United States, Vanterpool's career as a professional player found it difficult to get going. After a failed brief engagement in Italy , Vanterpool played for a good two years in the Chinese Basketball Association before he finally got a contract in the highest-endowed professional league NBA via the US “ Minor Leagues ” . However, this lasted only a few months and at the age of almost 30 Vanterpool went back to Italy, where he finally moved up into the best European club teams and at the end of his career as a player with CSKA Moscow won the ULEB Euroleague 2005/06 . After his active career as a player, Vanterpool became a coach and has been working as an assistant coach for the Portland Trailblazers in the NBA since 2012 .

Career

After graduating from high school in Silver Spring ( MD ), Vanterpool went to study at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany in the neighboring state of New York . There he played from 1991 to 1995 for the university team Bonnies in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) of the NCAA Division I. With this team he celebrated no particular success in these four years. In his senior year 1995 it was enough for the only " postseason " participation of his college career, when they survived the first round in the National Invitation Tournament , but were then eliminated in the second round against the eventual finalist Golden Eagles of Marquette University . Individually, Vanterpool was one of the most important players in his university team and is considered the only player in the history of the Bonnies to have collected more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds , 200 assists and 100 ball wins for this team in the course of his college career . Nevertheless, Vanterpool was subsequently not selected in the entry draft of the highest endowed professional league NBA .

Instead, Vanterpool went to Italy for the 1995/96 season and signed a contract with Brescialat from Gorizia in the A2 series . After two appearances at the beginning of the season, in which Vanterpool scored almost 25 points per game, the contractual relationship was terminated. It wasn't until the beginning of 1997 that Vanterpool had his next professional engagement when he played for the Northeast Tigers from Jilin Province , which joined the Chinese Basketball Association . In 1999 Vanterpool went back to his homeland and played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for the Yakima Sun Kings, with whom he won the league championship in 2000. After the league went bankrupt in early 2001, Vanterpool wanted to join the Knights from Kansas City in another minor league, the new American Basketball Association (ABA) , which had existed since 1999 . However, he also got a contract offer from the Washington Wizards and came so in the NBA 2000/01 at the age of 27 for his first appearances in the highest endowed professional league NBA, after he had been deleted from the squad of the Detroit Pistons before the start of the season in the fall was. After 22 games with an average of almost 19 minutes and almost 6 points per game, the contract ended at the end of the season. In the pre-season preparation for the following NBA 2001/02 Vanterpool then had a contract with the New Jersey Nets , the validity of which, however, did not experience the beginning of the season. Therefore, Vanterpool finally played in the 2001/02 season for the Kansas City Knights in the ABA, who won the championship in the second edition of the young league.

For the 2002/03 season Vanterpool went again to Italy, where he played this time in the top division Lega Basket Serie A for Felice Scandone from Avellino in Campania . There he reached the league with the team in fourth from last place in the table. As the seventh best scorer in the league, he moved to last year's fourth Montepaschi from Siena in Tuscany , with whom he won their first Italian championship at the end of the 2003/04 season. In addition, they reached for the second time in a row the Final Four tournament in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2003/04 , in which they only finished fourth after two narrow defeats. In the following season they were eliminated in this competition already in the intermediate round of the 16 best teams and as defending champion in the Italian championship in the first play-off round. Then Vanterpool changed again the club and moved to the Euroleague fourth CSKA from Moscow . With this club he not only defended the national double from championship and cup competition in Russia , but also achieved a triple crown under the Italian coach Ettore Messina by winning the ULEB Euroleague 2005/06 title . Behind final MVP Theodoros Papaloukas , Vanterpool had the best scoring for his team in the final against defending champion Maccabi Tel Aviv with 16 points. In the following season, the defending champion moved into the final again, but this time it was just lost by two points against Panathinaikos Athens . After a back injury, however, Vanterpool remained without a commitment from the second round in this competition and ended his active career at the age of 34 after defending the national double.

After the end of his active career, Vanterpool initially remained connected to CSKA Moscow and worked in the 2008/09 season as an assistant coach in the coaching staff of Ettore Messina, who initially left the club at the end of the season. After Vanterpool worked as an assistant coach in the 2010 NBA Summer League for the Trail Blazers from Portland (Oregon) , he worked as a scout for the Oklahoma City Thunder for the next two years . In 2012 he returned to the Trail Blazers and was inducted into the coaching staff as an assistant.
