Dera Ghazi Khan District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Punjab Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name Dera Ghazi Khan .

location

The district is located in the extreme southwest of Punjab.

geography

The district extends over a length of 180 km along the west bank of the Indus . It lies on the edge of the lowlands of the Indus basin. It is bounded in the west by a ridge. The north-south extension is almost 340 km, the west-east extension is 80 km. The Taunsa dam on the Indus is located 50 km north of the district capital .

climate

The area is characterized by low rainfall. In summer the temperatures rise to values ​​of up to 46 ° C, in winter they are usually around 4 ° C.

history

Dera Ghazi Khan district was established in 1849 after the end of the Second Sikh War as part of the British Empire . After Pakistan's independence in 1947, Dera Ghazi Khan became part of Pakistan. In 1982 the newly established Rajanpur district was separated.

Languages ​​and ethnic groups

The following languages ​​are spoken: Saraiki , Baluchi , Urdu and Punjabi . Tribes in the area are: Leghari, Khosa, Buzdar, Qaisrani and Lund.

education

The literacy rate in the years 2014/15 among the population over 10 years of age was 43% (women: 29%, men: 58%) and is thus well below the average of 63% in the Punjab Province.
