Five friends

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Five ( english The Famous Five ? / I ) of the English children's book author Enid Blyton is one of the most successful children's book series in the world. Audio file / audio sample

main characters

  • Georgina (called George, also Georg in the German book editions), daughter of the scientist Quentin and his wife Fanny, is eleven years old at the beginning of the book series. She would rather be a boy, hates clothes and dolls and is described as dismissive, cheeky and surly, but basically brave and loyal. She has short brown curly hair and is the cousin of the other three children. The rock island , which has been in the family for many years, belongs to her. She is very proud that one of her ancestors was a great captain.
  • Julian (Ju, also renamed Julius in the German book editions) is twelve years old and the leader and spokesman of the Five Friends. He appears very mature and always has a solution for all difficulties. He has medium-short straight blonde hair.
  • Richard (mostly shortened to Dick) is the eleven-year-old brother of Julian and Anne. He's the joker and occasionally raises George with her desire to be a boy. He is also a passionate eater. He has medium-short brown straight hair.
  • Anne is ten years old, Julian and Dick's little sister, and is portrayed as a role-compliant girl. She actually hates adventure and - in contrast to George - is more housewarming. She has shoulder length straight blonde hair.
  • Timotheus, often called Timmy and sometimes Tim for short, is the fifth in the group: an above-average intelligent mixed breed dog that George found in the moor and that now belongs to her. George loves him more than anything.

1Subsequent changes: Since 1990, volume 11 has been given the title Five Friends and the Wilde Jo in most of the new editions . In the books, the word “ gypsies ” was also replaced by “land drivers”.
2The clear deviation of the German title from the original title can be explained by the original text of the story: Originally the moor was called “Misty Moor” by the locals, later called “Mystery Moor” (German actually "The moor shrouded in mystery"); from which the German title of the volume arose.
3 An additional volume with eight short stories, which for the first time since 1954 were printed step by step in various magazines and books with different content.
4thBook in which Enid Blyton's script for a play from 1955 is printed, which has some similarities to Five Friends Help Their Comrade and thus also to Five Friends Hunt the Kidnappers , but which is still different from them. A German translation exists but has not yet been published.

Brigitte Blobel

Brigitte Blobel is considered to be the author of volumes 22 and 23 of the Five Friends series published by C. Bertelsmann Verlag . She is given as the translator . The two volumes were published without permission from the English copyright holder; the books had to be taken off the market for licensing reasons and founded the myth of the so-called ghost volumes among German Enid Blyton collectors .

The volumes are considered rarities today:

  • Five Friends on the Forbidden Island, 1977
  • Five Friends and the Blue Diamond, 1979

Claude Voilier

Claude Voilier wrote other episodes between 1971 and 1985, which first appeared in France . The volumes are partially interspersed with numerous comic inserts.

This was followed by three productions by Kurt Vethake , which were published by Ariola and later by Baccarola and Marcato :

  • Five friends on new adventures
  • Five friends on mysterious tracks

Due to the great success of the Five Friends TV series , the Poly label released a series of radio plays based on the original dubbing tracks from the TV series.

In 1978 the first episode of the radio play series was published by EUROPA- Verlag, which also includes the series Die drei ??? and TKKG published as radio plays. The four main speakers of the television series were again engaged. The order of the series was changed for the radio plays: Since the first four volumes had already been set to music, the remaining episodes were initially dealt with and the first four episodes were only edited last.

Only episodes 1 to 21 are from Enid Blyton; the series was continued by various authors after her death. The first eight of the new series of radio plays (from episode 22) are based on the books by Claude Voilier, which were published in France between 1971 and 1983 and some of them also appeared in German translation. From episode 22 of the radio play series, the speakers will also change. With episode 30, the radio play production set its own stories to music that did not appear as books. So far, neither the Five Friends books by Sarah Bosse nor the ghost books have been set to music. Most of the audio play scripts set to music are by Gabriele Hartmann and Katrin McClean . The children's speakers were exchanged again with episode 30.

music

The music used in the various radio play productions differed considerably in some cases. But two productions had one thing in common: They each had a theme song with similar content.

The theme music for the Polydor production was taken from the 1978 TV series Five Friends :

“Whenever an adventure is worthwhile: / We don't know fear and horror, / because we are used to it. / Wherever there is a riddle to solve / high up in the old castle / or in the smugglers' hest. / Five friends, that's us: / Julian, Dick and Anne, / George and Ti-hi-mmy, the Hu-hu-dog. / Five friends, that's us. / We'll come over quickly, / whenever you want it - / and we're there-ha-ha-ha. "

The theme song of the Europa-Produktion has the following text:

“We are the five friends / Julian and Dick, Anne and George / and Timmy the dog / We are the best of friends, yes! / We stick together, whatever comes up / When things get exciting, we are there / Julian, Dick, Anne and George and Timmy the dog, yes / We are attracted by adventures and we explore old walls / castles and caves and some underground ones Gear. / There's no secret in the world / that we five friends like so much! / We are on the trail of every puzzle / We solve them, believe me ... just! "

The theme song of the European production was sung by Carsten Bohn , who also composed many of the intermediate melodies in episodes 9 to 21. However, due to a legal dispute, these were replaced in later episodes or editions. The title song has remained unchanged to this day, as the rights for this are owned by Europe.

But Enid Blyton himself had the idea of a theme song with similar motifs. The text of her five friends song is printed in the book The Famous Five - Adventure .

Awards

The European production received the following awards for its five friends radio plays:

  • Golden record
    • 17 × gold for episodes 5 to 21
    • 4 × platinum for episodes 1 to 4

Movies and TV series

The book series of the five friends was filmed in the form of feature films and several times as a TV series .

In 1957 the mini-series The Thing with Treasure Island (Five on a Treasure Island) was created . The script was written by Michael Barnes , directed by Gerald Landau , edited and produced by Frank Wells , while Jack Beaver was in charge of editing the music.

In 1964 there was another mini-series called Five Have a Mystery to Solve (translated: Five friends have a secret to solve ).

A Canadian-Danish co-production attempted De fem og spionerne ( Five and the Spies ) in 1969 . Katrine Hedman wrote and directed the film . Enid Blyton's novel “Five Friends on New Adventures” served as a template. Bertrand Bech was responsible for the music .

A year later, the identical co-production team with an additional German partner set about filming “Five friends get into trouble” as Five Friends in Ink (original title: De Poster 5 i fedtefadet ). Amazingly, this film adaptation was not published in French or English in the production country Canada. The only English language version in North America was distributed from the United States .

Two successful television series debuted in 1978 and 1996:

  • 1978 the British production Five Friends (Orig .: The Famous Five ) and
  • 1996 a British-Canadian-German co-production, also under the title Fünf Freunde (Orig .: The Famous Five )

While the 1995 film version of the Five Friends had been available on DVD in Germany for a long time, the 1978 series (which was far more popular with many fans) was a long time coming. Nobody seemed to own the rights to the film. Due to the efforts of countless fans, these problems were resolved and in autumn 2010 the 1978 series was first released in Germany on DVD and Blu-ray.

For the 100th birthday of Enid Blyton, a musical was created in 1997, which was also released on DVD under the name The Famous Five - Smuggler's Gold - The Musical .

The animated series Five Friends for All Occasions was also created in 2008 , which however had little to do with the original template. The main characters in this case are the children of the protagonists.

In May 2011, Constantin Film announced that it would produce the first German feature film about the Five Friends. Five Friends came into theaters on January 26, 2012; Actors include Michael Fitz , Anna Böttcher , Gustav Peter Wöhler , Anatole Taubman and Valeria Eisenbart . The location for the new film was mainly Schleswig . The film was based on motifs from Five Friends Exploring Treasure Island and Five Friends on the Rock Island and thus shows similarities to the implementation of the first story of the 1978 television series The Five Friends. At the beginning of 2013, the sequel to the movie Five Friends 2 appeared , in which the story Five Friends got into trouble was retold. Books were published for each of the two cinema films, for which Sarah Bosse converted the scripts by Peer Klehmet and Sebastian Wehlings into novels. Another film in the cinema series has been announced. During the production of Five Friends 3 , however, there were apparently some difficulties beforehand; the dog's actor has been replaced. After the success of Part 3, Constantin Film announced Five Friends 4 , which was released in German cinemas on January 29, 2015. Mike Marzuk also directed all of the sequels. In 2018, the 5th film Five Friends and the Valley of the Dinosaurs was produced for the German market, with five new leading actors being cast.

The English comedian group Comic Strip also released three Five ... episodes, which are extremely exaggerated five-friend parodies.
