The Division 2 , also Supertvåan called, is the fourth-highest division in Sweden's senior football .

It consists of six individual regional leagues, the champions of which are promoted to Division 1 . Below it is Division 3 , which consists of twelve regional leagues.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the start of the season planned for April 2020 was initially postponed to mid-June 2020.

history

The name Division 2 has been around since 1925, but the meaning of the division differed considerably. From the official introduction in 1928 to 1986, the division was, as the name suggests, the second highest division, directly below the first division Fotbollsallsvenskan , which was also called Division 1 . The system was changed for the 1987 season. The previous Division 2 was renamed Division 1 . The name remained through a newly established league, which was now only the third highest.

In 2000, the two leagues of the division 1 division were merged to form a Superettan . The Division 2 remained unaffected, even if now no Division 1 existed more.

The newly established system required the Masters of Division 2 to play in a qualifying round for promotion to the Superettan . This was seen by many as unfortunate, as a championship usually results in promotion to the next higher division. Therefore, a new Division 1 with two regional leagues of 14 teams each was introduced between Division 2 and Superettan . This regulation was first applied in 2006. The Division 2 is only the fourth highest division in Sweden since then.

The Masters of Division 2 go straight to Division 1 . The runners-up play a qualifying round in two groups, the winner of which against the 13th of the north and south seasons of Division 1, two relegation games for promotion or. deny staying in class. The teams in positions 12 to 14 of the two seasons of Division 1 are relegated to Division 2 .

The two bottom of the table in Division 2 are relegated and replaced by the champions of the twelve seasons of Division 3 .
