The airfield Ellwangen is a special airfield near the town of Ellwangen in Ostalbkreis . It is approved for gliders , powered gliders , microlight aircraft and powered aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to two tons.
Events
A jazz festival and an airfield festival take place regularly on the area of the airfield.
Accidents
On August 23, 2009, two aircraft collided during the sightseeing flights on the occasion of the annual airport festival. A Robinson R44 helicopter and a Cessna F182 collided on final approach . After the collision, the helicopter fell straight to the ground. The 42-year-old pilot and all three passengers suffered fatal injuries as a result of the impact. The aircraft lost its altitude control due to the collision and the 57-year-old pilot tried to continue the approach using the altitude trim. Shortly before the threshold of runway 12, the aircraft hit the ground, seriously injuring the pilot.
