history

In January 1910, the first airfield was opened in Constance. In 1919 Konstanz was the first southern German city with regular public passenger flights to Berlin , and later to Munich and Stuttgart . The number of passengers in 1923 was twelve times as high as two years earlier. Constance developed into a "main traffic base" for the future air traffic network. From 1925 to 1940, Deutsche Lufthansa operated a scheduled flight between Konstanz and Frankfurt am Main .

According to statistics from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior, the airfield recorded 2,631 take-offs and landings in 1960 and 5,401 in 1962. With 105 percent, the highest percentage increase in all of Baden-Württemberg was achieved.

In November 1965 it was moved to its current location.

closure

The airfield has been threatened with closure several times. In 2011, this was discussed in the local council , a new industrial park should be built on the area . However, there was still a lot of vacancy in the city, so it was not closed and in 2012 the lease was extended to 2017 with an option for a further five years. At the end of 2014, the city of Konstanz wanted to update the old commercial space development concept. For this purpose, an expert opinion was commissioned from an urban development office, but this has been criticized. This recommends that the airfield be closed and the grassy area converted into a commercial area. The city of Konstanz is the majority owner of Flughafen Konstanz GmbH. For its part, it can terminate the contract with twelve months' notice to the end of the year.

In 2015 there was a petition for the preservation of the airfield. She had reached the quorum with 11,397 votes for receipt, 1,617 of them from Constance.

At the beginning of 2016, the municipal council wants to decide on an extension or termination of the lease.
