The Eberhard von Kuenheim Foundation is a public foundation under civil law of BMW AG. It was founded by BMW AG in 2000 in honor of the long-standing Chairman of the Board of Management and Supervisory Board, Eberhard von Kuenheim , and is based in Munich. Its mission is to promote entrepreneurial thinking and action - beyond the economic context.

In March 2016, the two foundations of the BMW Group, the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt and the Eberhard von Kuenheim Foundation pooled their strengths and resources. Since then, they have appeared together under the name BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt .

Board of Trustees and Board of Directors

Since March 2016, the Board of Management and the Board of Trustees of the two BMW foundations (Eberhard von Kuenheim Foundation and BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt) have been identical: The Chairman of the Board of Trustees is Joachim Milberg , former Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. Further members are the founder of the Boston Consulting Group in Germany, Bolko von Oetinger , Friedrich Eichiner as a board member of BMW AG, the managing director of the Institute for Demoskopie Allensbach Renate Köcher , the supervisory board members of BMW AG Stefan Quandt and Norbert Reithofer , the board member of BMW AG Maximilian Schöberl and the director of Bayerischer Rundfunk Ulrich Wilhelm .

Eberhard von Kuenheim chaired the board of trustees from 2000 to 2010. In 2010 he was appointed honorary chairman of the board of trustees for life.

Working method and topics

Under the motto “the joy of new: dare”, the Eberhard von Kuenheim Foundation develops, tests or supports new solution models for current social issues. With partners from business, science, politics and the non-profit (third) sector, it creates spaces for social innovation and responsibility through specific projects. After completion of the pilot phase, the projects will be transferred to self-employment with the aim of showing an effect in everyday use.

With its work, the foundation sees itself as a manufacturer of areas of social responsibility.

The foundation projects are developed in cooperation with experts and project partners with the aim of turning the pilot projects into self-employment after successful testing and with proof of effectiveness. The projects are intended to provide specific answers to social challenges in selected areas of social responsibility - such as schools, universities and companies. The core elements of the foundation's work are collegial advice and the involvement of cooperation partners who are pro bono involved in the foundation's projects.

The foundation works exclusively operationally and not in a supporting manner. This means that it develops projects itself and does not award any scholarships or financial support to other initiatives.

The partners of the foundation

The foundation works with experts from business, science, politics and the non-profit sector across systems. The aim is to create a long-term participation structure as a model for a lively civil society.

Projects

The focus of the foundation's work lies in the areas of education, work and sustainable action. In these areas, the foundation develops solutions with proof of effectiveness for relevant social issues. The foundation's projects are intended to make a contribution to a self-sustaining society.

Meaningful investment

In the "Sinnvestition" project, the foundation, in cooperation with the BMW Herbert Quandt Foundation, implements the form of impact investing in its own asset management and would like to encourage other foundations to open up to this topic. The previously little-known in Germany approach of "impact investing" or "results-based investing" aims investment in addition to a financial return to achieve a social and / or environmental impact. In this context, there is often talk of a double return. The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) defines impact investing on the basis of four criteria: (1) Intention to achieve a social / ecological impact through the investment, (2) financial return expectations, (3) different return expectations and asset classes, (4) measurable social impact. Impact investing therefore goes beyond “socially responsible investing” ( SRI ), which for example includes the definition of exclusion criteria (child labor, anti-personnel mines, etc.). Impact investing as an investment strategy is not only intended to avoid possible damage. The use of capital should explicitly contribute to solving a social or ecological problem. Especially in the current phase of low interest rates, impact investments represent a lever for foundations to increase the impact of their work with investments. With the Sinnvestition project, the foundation tries to transfer knowledge and experience about the possibilities, opportunities and risks of impact investing to the foundation world. Among other things , an expert group on impact investing was set up in 2013 together with the Federal Association of German Foundations , made up of representatives from 15 foundations (including the Schweisfurth Foundation , Hope Bearers Foundation , BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt , Castringius Foundation and Bertelsmann Foundation ). As part of the quarterly meeting, questions about the investment process, changes to investment guidelines, the legal requirements for impact investing, etc. are discussed. The Eberhard von Kuenheim Foundation itself has already made a number of impact investments. These include investments in the Joblinge project , the brain capital education fund, the Leipzig wind farm, the JUVAT Social Impact Bond (Eleven Augsburg model project), the Impact Hub Global Network or the MRI pilot fund for education.

Take responsibility initiative

Taking responsibility is an initiative of the foundation that supports companies and their managers in implementing specific projects in the area of sustainability in the core business of their organization . The basic idea is to strive for a benefit for society and a benefit for the company at the same time : Accordingly, companies and organizations are only sustainable if they take into account not only profit and growth in their core business , but also the long-term requirements of society . Since the initiative was launched in 2011, 40 companies have participated and received support and advice on sustainability and responsible business practices (as of 2015). The year with campus days and implementation phases in the company is a core element of the initiative and is basically open to all members. The prerequisite for participation is the application with a relevant field of activity , the willingness to take part in the multi-day events of the year and the mandate of the participants by the company management. The initiative addresses organizations from different industries and sectors ( corporations , small and medium-sized enterprises, public -sector institutions , from the non-profit sector and start-ups ) who develop and implement a project in their area of responsibility over the course of twelve months . In addition to the year, there is the opportunity to take part in orientation events in advance of an application (experience taking responsibility and action field workshop ) in order to get to know the way the initiative works and to define possible fields of action. After each year, topic-specific events are offered (e.g. focus days) to deepen the results and anchor them in the company. The chair of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität for Controlling and Corporate Accounting accompanies the classes scientifically and in the determination of impact targets . The project was recognized by the UNESCO Commission as a contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development .

Lehr: workshop

In the Lehr: werkstatt project, a teacher is assigned a teacher training student for the duration of a school year through a matching based on the deferred acceptance algorithm of the Nobel Prize winners Lloyd S. Shapley and Alvin E. Roth . Under the slogan "More people per student" that can tandem with methods of team teaching the increasing heterogeneity encounter in the classroom. Both tandem partners develop their own professional personality further: the teachers can try out new methods, the students get a realistic insight into their future profession during this intensive internship. The students can be encouraged more individually . The project is offered in cooperation with several university locations. The universities offer accompanying events and competence workshops (e.g. on topics such as classroom management or professional consulting). The project teaching: has workshop three objectives: to contribute to skills development and motivation of current and future teachers make an informed decision by students regarding their career choices and at the level of school development , the development of leadership skills and a cultural change in the school towards more teamwork among Teachers.

A further training course for educators and a book with units for philosophizing were developed. The project supports education for sustainable development and has been recognized by the UNESCO Commission as a contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development .

Joblings

The Joblinge initiative was set up with the Boston Consulting Group to enable unemployed young people to gain access to training or employment. Full-time employees and volunteer mentors support the participating young people in a six-month program individually and in a practice-oriented manner. The aim is that the participants learn key qualifications, train social skills and develop a concrete opportunity for an apprenticeship or job in various company internships. The project is organized in regional non-profit joint-stock companies (gAGs). The programs of the gAGs are funded by the public purse. In addition, companies support the locations by subscribing for shares , sponsoring or running training courses . Theresienthal resumed work in August 2004.

Tatfunk

In the Tatfunk project, high school students develop their own radio broadcast over the course of a school year and receive a small budget with which they can independently produce their broadcast. The students learn journalistic basics from a media coach and on a learning platform on the Internet. Further learning objectives are to plan a project yourself from the start, to work together as a project team and to present your own results to the public.
