The yellow horn clover , which was used as a motif for the coat of arms of the former municipality of Gai, can also be found on the meadows.

history

prehistory

Settlements from the Neolithic Age (5000 to 2000 BC) are documented by means of several stone and flat axes, some can be seen in the Leoben City Museum.

In 1915, in the course of the construction of the Russenstrasse between Edling and Sankt Peter-Freienstein, a hilted sword of the Anneheim type was found during excavation work on the western slope of the mountain Kulm , which is referred to in literature as the sword of Edling and is exhibited in the Trofaiach city museum. Accordingly, there was already a firm trading relationship with the northern Italian region. This did not change in the Urnfield period . The nearby copper mines in Gaishorn , Radmer and Kammern in Liesingtal supplied the coveted goods. For this reason, hilltop settlements were created to protect the population from enemy threats. Today it is considered proven that such settlements existed on Häuselberg near Leoben as well as on Kulm. On the Kulm, for example, pottery fragments and remains of slag were found during test excavations. They date from 1100 to 500 BC. Chr.

The settlement on the Kulm can be seen as the main settlement of the Trofaiach basin. There were probably 300 to 350 people living there. In addition, there was already a connection from the Liesingtal to the Vordernbergertal, which led via Edling. It is a listed building .

If the most important finds of the Hallstatt period (750 to 450 BC) also come from the grave field near the Leoben district of Hinterberg-Steinleiten , it can be assumed that the Edlinger area was not entirely sidelined. From 450 BC BC to 15 BC The area was shaped like a Celtic . The entire area was part of the Kingdom of Noricum .

Noricum was incorporated into the Roman Empire. Most gravestones and memorials from this era have survived. Several were found near Edling. The best known of these finds is probably the burial chapel discovered in August 1858 in Vordernbergerbach near Donawitz . The Roman administrative seat for the Leoben area was in Flavia Solva . From there, the road network was organized that stretched through the Mur and Liesing valleys to the Danube . There was also a road of lower order in the Vordernbergertal.

Local history

Edling emerged from a Slavic predecessor settlement mainly through the division of the old Edlinger estate . It was first mentioned as a noblewoman around 1150 . It was named after small aristocrats , who can also be compared with large farmers who have a permanent following. The vulgar names of the homestead as well as those of the entire village are derived from such a “Edling” .

In terms of pastoral care, the Catholic Mass Chapel of St. Mary in Edling belongs to the parish of St. Peter-Freienstein , and thus to the Trofaiach parish association.

Edling has been part of the city of Trofaiach since January 1, 2013 .

Economy and Infrastructure

The economy is dominated by agriculture and a few restaurants; there is also a car repair shop.

Edling is at the intersection of the L 116 and the B 115 . The L 116 leads from Edling west to Seiz and east as "Russenstraße" to Sankt Peter-Freienstein. The name, which occurs more often in Austria, arose from the fact that this road was built by Russian prisoners of war during World War I in 1915, which replaced the previously existing easy path. The B 115 represents an important connection between the connection to the Pyhrn Autobahn in Traboch and the Vordernbergertal.

leisure

The "Bad Edling" bathing pond existed in the village some time ago, and today it can be used as a fishing pond. Today the Trabocher See is used as a recreational area.
