José Edmílson Gomes de Moraes , called Edmílson (born July 10, 1976 in Taguaritinga ), is a former Brazilian football player with Italian citizenship.

The central defender , who can also play in defensive midfield , began his career at XV de Jaú . The white Brazilian moved to his first professional club in 1994. This was São Paulo FC . At the beginning of the 2000/2001 season, the central defender moved to Europe to Olympique Lyon , where he was a regular player and won three French championships within three years (2002 to 2004) . Since 2004/2005 the Brazilian has played with the Italian passport at FC Barcelona in Catalonia . In the first year Edmílson suffered a cruciate ligament rupture , so that he only made six league appearances for Barça. In the two following seasons he was used regularly and contributed to winning the Champions League in 2006 . After a disappointing 2007/2008 season, he moved to Villarreal in the summer of 2008 on a free transfer . Since he didn't play a major role there either and only made six league appearances in the first half, he decided to go back to Brazil. He signed a two-year contract with SE Palmeiras in January 2009 . During the winter break of the 2009/10 season, he moved to the relegation-threatened Real Saragossa .

In the summer of 2011 it was announced that Edmílson is moving to his home country for the Brazilian first division club Ceará SC .

National team

Edmílson made his debut for the Brazilian national team in July 2000 when they beat Peru . He won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, but missed the 2006 World Cup in 2006 due to an injury.

By 2007 he had a total of 44 international matches for the Brazilian national team .
