The Elbe Cycle Path begins in Špindlerův Mlýn (Spindleruv Mlyn) in the Giant Mountains in northern Czech Republic and ends after 1,220 kilometers in Cuxhaven at the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea . 840 kilometers run on German territory. The route in Germany corresponds to D-Route 10. The Elbe Cycle Route runs through the federal states of Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt , Brandenburg , Lower Saxony , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg .

The Elberadweg has been expanded in parts to become an Elberad- and hiking trail. It is used by both cyclists and pedestrians. In 2017 it was voted Germany's most popular long-distance cycle route for the 13th time in a row by members of the ADFC .

In the Giant Mountains, the cycle path begins a few kilometers below the source of the Elbe at the Vrchlabí train station with the yellow signpost 2. In Mělník , the Vltava flows into the Elbe . The yellow signage 2 from the Vltava cycle path continues along the Elbe to the German-Czech border in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains .

The stages of the cycle route are Litoměřice and Ústí nad Labem . The route then leads between Děčín in front of the German-Czech border to Pirna through Bohemian Switzerland and Saxon Switzerland in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The route leads through Dresden , Meißen , Torgau , Lutherstadt Wittenberg , Dessau , Magdeburg , Tangermünde , Havelberg , Wittenberge , Lauenburg , Hamburg and Cuxhaven .

Smaller cities in Germany

There are many smaller cities that are still worth seeing, such as Mühlberg (here the Elbe Cycle Route also leads a short distance through Brandenburg ) or Jerichow with its brick monastery, which is historically significant .

The first German cyclist church , the Weßnig cyclist church , is located on the Elbe cycle path between Belgern and Torgau, and another one in the city of Wehlen .

history

In the 1990s, the marking of individual sections in the Elbe Cycle Path began. In 1993, for example, his section in Saxon Switzerland was marked and signposted. From 1998 the route was made more level and paved more often. The first package tours were also launched this year. The first information brochures followed in 2001, as the Elberadweg was used more and more. After the floods in Central Europe in 2002 , tourism collapsed for a short time, as many parts of the cycle path first had to be repaired. The 2013 flood caused further damage, but it was easy to repair.

Since 2005, the Elberadweg has repeatedly been voted Germany's most popular cycle path. It was not until 2019 that he had to cede his top position to the Weser Cycle Path .
