In the fifth century - at a distance of one kilometer - the place Sedz ( civitas sedis ) became a bishopric. At the beginning of the 10th century, the city was moved to the right bank of the river between the valleys ( Inter Valès ). Under the barons of Glandèves, the place finally became French with the incorporation of Provence into France at the end of the 15th century. In 1494 the place was taken due to treason by the Duke of Savoy, but immediately won back to the King of France by Mirabeau .

Modern times

Entrevaux Citadel

In 1690, King Louis XIV commissioned Vauban to fortify Entrevaux. The work was not fully completed, but the city and citadel were reinforced. The fortress withstood the siege by the Savoy in June 1707.

With the French Revolution, the diocese was abolished. On the night of January 17-18, 1792, Mayor Carros led a counter-revolutionary uprising.

The incorporation of Nice into France in 1860 ( Treaty of Turin ) led to a shift in the French border. Nevertheless, the fortress was used until the beginning of the 20th century and served as a prisoner of war camp for German officers during the First World War .
