history

Medieval buildings in the town center

In Roman times, an oppidum existed on the slope at a place called Vers-la-Ville . Traces of the houses built on the rock walls and steps carved in stone can still be seen.

The current location in the valley of the Vaïre is more recent. In 1042 it was fortified around the Saint-Pons church, and in 1084 it is mentioned in a document. The landlord was initially the Saint-Victor Abbey in Marseille , which shared certain rights with the Knights Templar . After the order was dissolved, its goods came to the Saint-Pons Abbey in Nice .

Later the area belonged to the county of Provence (Comté de Provence). In the course of the succession disputes following the death of Johannas I in the 14th century, the community changed sides and joined the camp of Ludwig von Anjou through the mediation of Marie von Châtillon-Blois . In 1388 Marie set up a fair and approved the place to hold weekly markets . In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Saint-Pons family was the local landlord.

During the Huguenot Wars , Annot was attacked by the Protestants in 1574. The community was spared the plague epidemics of 1626 and 1670. At the end of the 17th century she was included in the bi-monthly mail service with mules from Entrevaux to Aix . In 1680 four notaries were counted in Annot , and in the 18th century a viguerie (seat of a royal administrative and judicial officer) was established. A community militia set up in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession had to be raised for 1200 pounds after its defeat  .

In the 19th century a modest industrialization began with spinning and weaving mills . In 1856 two of the original three companies employed a total of 40 workers. In 1863 there were two primary schools for boys in the community, which were followed a little later by a girls' school. In 1908 the place received a rail connection to Nice , which was followed in 1911 by the connection to Digne . Wine was grown in the municipality until the middle of the 20th century.
